"Makeshift" and "contraption" kinda' implies that Robin would do something sub-standard to his truck. Most of us can assure you that nothing could be farther from reality.
Over the years, Robin has established himself as doing top-quality work, and if he deemed it OK to use aftermarket parts in this application, I'd not think twice about doing the same.

Noo.. Not implying Robin did anything like that. I just havnt had good luck with AutoZone off brand electronic components.
Guys, I sold Frank the '08 tail lights after looking at them closely and finding out that they DO take a smaller bulb (like the little ones that are commonly used for side marker lights on some cars) I don'y feel that there is a bulb that small that can be had to put out the light the originals do either in LED or the extra brights that some claim.
IF I had gone ahead and installed the '08 lights I would have bought the sockets for the bulbs at Autozoo or somewhere else and used a scotch-lok type deal to attach them and left the original sockets dangling behind the lights so they could be switched back someday.
I just don't see why Ford went this route-was it to save .05 on the overall cost to build the '08 up trucks?

The 921 bulbs I used in my 2008 tail light conversion are the same as what was used in the 2008. I checked the 2008 owner's manual. It's not the size of the bulb but the wattage, reflector behind the bulb and the lense the light shines through that determines the brightness. The 921 backup lamps are every bit as bright, if not brighter, than stock backup lamps.
If you need more backup lighting then add some auxillary backup lights.
Almost a year and a half later and no problems with the backup lights.

There is MUCH more to do with light output than bulb size. Wattage, construction, filament material, reflectors, housing...
For example look at the bulb housing. The 99-07 one is hazy and has no diamond like reflectors, just a chrome painted back (IIRC). The 08+ has a clear lense and directed diamond like reflectors.
Case in point, look at street lights. Remember how they used to be a yellow orange? Most places have converted to newer bulbs or LED variants that have more light output in the same lamps
