Let me preface this by saying my original concern was why the comp. cycles frequently even when the warm defrost or heat is on ( comp. is for the AC right?) but researching some other threads seems that its normal(why?).Anyway so its normal but then my next concern is its kinda loud, not a subtle tick but more of a hard clack and its annoying to me. Read some more posts here and it seems maybe the comp gap is getting wider and sooner or later that leads to failure. So, is the gap adjustable or will the comp need to be replaced at some point in the future. Also if the comp is about to fail what are the typicall warnings?BTW this is a 98 4.0 XLT
#1. The reason it cycles during defrost is to remove humidity from the incoming air to better defrost. I don't think there is a car made today with A/C that doesn't do this.
#2 the spec is .014-.033" gap. to adjust you remove the clutch and add or remove spacers or shims.
if the compressor clutch is worn badly, it can be replaced without discharging the system/replacing the whole compressor..I had a compressor clutch coil burn up on my 06 Escape, replaced the clutch assembly, and the compressor is working fine again... cost about $80-something for a new clutch assy..(included coil, pulley/w new bearing and the outer hub)..
only signs i can think of for a failing compressor are, poor cooling from the A/C(compressor not building enough head pressure), excessive noise, and increased drag on the engine(harder to turn)
A system like those on Fords cycles the clutch when the evaporator pressure is drawn too low, which can occur with a)low demand or b)short supply of refrigerant. If you run the defroster to defog the windows, rather than defrost, the ambient may not be high enough to demand full compressor output and it will cycle. If the refrigerant is low, it will cycle even when it is on max air, max fan, and the doors wide open. That would be maximum{more than} demand. It should not cycle on maximum demand.

I think I saw around here somewhere what functions the comp. is supposed to and not cycle. Maybe i'll try finding that again and see if maybe the coolant is just low and so it cycles a lot and just seems more annoying than usuall.
