my steering wheel is in good condition physically (no cracks, etc)...but the paint is worn through. Can anyone let meknow what the appropriate steps are to refinish the wheel?, I assume i would use an acrylic urethane, but id do no know what steps to take.
i don't know what to tell you except to sell it to me! mine is all cracked up and the horn pad is being held on by electrical tape. replacements are like 300 bucks so I think I'll just go aftermarket, like Grant or something along those lines...
I saw some guys refurbish one on a classic car show one episode. Their wheel was in really rough shape and they had to rebuild it, but when it came down to painting it, they just sprayed it like any other part.
I would go with the toughest paint I could find. I would assume that Imron or any two part epoxy polimide paint would be best. ask your local paint experts what they would use and maybe call a classic auto resto shop. get several answers and go from there.
My steering wheel is in great condition. It always was covered in those vinyl steering wheel covers with plastic strings. The Ford logo is faded, though. And I don't have woodgrain on the wheel. Was it optional with the fancy interior or something?
