I currently pull a 4000 pound travel trailer with 3.08 gears m50d and 31x10.50x15's. I am getting ready to install 3.55's and was wondering what kind of difference that will make in pulling the trailer. I can barely make 60mph with the current setup. Thanks for your time!!
A lot. All though if you're pulling a real lot of weight, it might be wise to go a bit taller with the gears, your improvement over the 3.08 will be very noticable.
heck, going from my 2.47's to 3.08s would make me happy... these things make my truck a dog unloaded, unless i get on it...they really lug the engine, i can't even pull a hill at 55 mph, it drops back to 50 by the time at the crest of the hill.
I've towed about 1.5 tons with my 2.47's but it wasn't easy, and it wasn't fast either.....
I run 3.50's and sort of have the same problem although Wolfcreek Pass (Colo) is one of the bigger hills around. I've read (and need to reread) here about "RV" cams, which increase low to mid-range torque. Anyone care to share cam likes/dislikes?
The comp cams 260 would be about ideal for towing, although ive never cammed an engine, i'd have to choose that one if i were looking for more bottom end.
What gets me is the guys that built this engine, built a hoss & a half of a motor, but didn't bother regearing....
...When I looked at switching to a five speed manual tranny, I realized that nothing was going to give me the "third & a half gear that I need. Switching out gears in a 4x4 is at least twice the work (I've heard the front is a bit painful - but never done one.) Now I'm lookin back at carb/cam/intake/header - any and all...
