Can anyone tell me what years are best, what to look for, stay away from.
Been a Ford truck owner all my life. Last work truck was a 2008 F-250 super duty crew cab. This truck had a 5.8 and it started knocking around 43K. Someone told me these motors had problems??
I just bought a 2002 v10 and love it. And I'm a diesel guy that owns 2 350 dually psd one 7.3,and one 6.0
The v10 is a has pig but it's a huge suv some say 2003 and up cause they changed the plug design but my dealership swears by the v10 and I have run across Manu that are v10 issue free.
Diesel id go 2002-2003 7.3 but probaly out of your price range. That was my dilemma I was in your range and found a fully loaded limited ultimate 4x4 I'd stay away from 2wd it's a heavy truck and I buried it in minimal Florida sand on a dirt road on test drive. My 2 cents
I have an 05 diesel. It never left me stranded but the turbo was replaced at 15k. Don't be afraid of the 6.0. Most of the problems were solved when they changed to the clean diesel. Now they are pretty reliable.
Plus they are a blast to drive. Remember the Ex is the top of the food chain as far as SUV's go and the diesel is the king of the Ex's.
Thanks for the replies!
Can you guys tell me what the gas mileage is for the V-10 VS a V-8 plus what do the diesels get for gas mileage?
Not that I care as this won't be my primary vehicle. for that I have a great 2002 F 150 that gets about 20 MPG
I don't really know yet on my v10 the lie Meter says I get 9.8 towing and around 14.9 no tow at 70ph. It's a big heavy truck Im not bashing any 5.4 owners but I would have to think the engine would have to work so much harder the v10 is awesome
I average 17MPG on my 6oh daily driver my daily commute is
50% hiway, 50% city streets.
That's with the A/C on all the time as well, which eats about 1-2 MPG.
I go minimum 700 miles on a tank and normally only fill-up once a
month.
On the highway (70-75MPH) I've gotten 21.5 MPG between FL & NC
and got 815 miles on a tank. If you go faster it'll kill you MPGs.
I can haul anything, everybody, anywhere, anytime AND I get
better mileage than my wife's Explorer and EVERY vehicle I've
ever owned.
Depending upon how much you drive the V8/V10 might be more
economical to buy, but many folks report 10-11 MPG so be prepared.
Misky hit the diesel nail on the head, only a couple of things; cold until warm, noise factor and maintenance costs if you don't do it yourself
15 mpg in the city & 18 highway unloaded.
Thanks, I just sold a 2008 F-250 super duty crew cab with a long bed which got between 9-10 MPG. I put better tires on it for snowplowing and lost 1 MPG right off the bat and never got it back. That had a 5.8 in it.
I'm really looking forward to buying an Excursion, not many here in NH so I may have to travel to find one. I was a little nervous about the V-10 but that sounds like the way to go for me. No real difference in MPG between the 8 or 10.

thats twice you posted that. Not to be nit-picky, but Ford killed the 5.8 (351 cubes) back in 1996/1997. The 5.4 3v (331 cubes) or the 6.8 V-10 are what you had in your 2008 truck.

OK, whatever. I've owned at least 20 ford trucks in the last 30 years I must have got confused.
Thanks for setting me straight.
