Buying new? No contest. V10. Both will tow well. The V10 is a mature product and reliable. The diesel is a time bomb of troubles waiting to happen.
If you really want a diesel then step back a couple years and get a good quality used truck.
Its what you really want and how long you plan on driving the truck. There is alot of people that have had no problems with their Diesels. Its just like any other make, you can buy a problem vehicle and your friend with the same exact vehicle has no problems. I just bought a 08 F350 6.4L and I love it. It is my first Diesel and now I wonder why I never bought one before.

thanks in advance for your response, but that is what scares me, how long i will have it for, and at what price?
My last two trucks were Toyota, and i had them for 10 years a piece. Abosolutly bullet proof. I am very, very, nervous about buying a Ford to begin with. Do I chance it with an unproven new 6.4 Diesel? Or is the v-10 proven and enough for what i need. And will it last for 10 years?
I have a diesel too. Not anti-diesel. But these new emission systems are complex and somewhat cobbled together and rushed to market without sufficient development time. Expect DPF problems when they don't clean out, turbo problems from dirty exhaust with high temperature, sensor failures, sensitivity to fuel quality, and who knows what else.
The V10 will last a long time. It's a great engine! Not a risk.
According to many here, the V10 is the best engine Ford makes. I had no issue with ordering one. It will tow a house and be reliable doing it. Also, check the V10 forum here. There was a recent post about the V10 putting as much power to the ground as a diesel. You won't be disappointed with the 10.

I totally agree with him. The V10 will do just fine with what your planning on doing with it.
V10. Before I got my V10, I had thought about a PSD, but now I am glad I got the V10. It tows and hauls like nothing else. Before my bigger tires I was getting about 16-18mpg highway and 12-14 city, but noew it has dropped since I have oversized tires.
Another thing to consider, I know a few guys that switched from diesel to V10's due to diesel costs (Fuel costs more, oil changes cost alot more)
Another thing (at least around here) diesel places are scarce. They used to be plentiful, but over the years many places stopped selling or closed. We had two places close this past year alone.
I have two 7.3 diesels and love them, but I'd buy a V10 if I were buying a new truck. The emissions controls have really dropped the diesel mileage and with the higher cost of diesel fuel there's no advantage to having one unless you need the towing torque. Also, if you need moderate engine work with the diesel, the cab of the truck must be pulled.
For your towing frequency I'd go with the V10. A diesel needs to be worked and cared for properly, gassers are a little looser on the maint. If you plan to keep the truck for the long haul I would be hesitant to go diesel mainly because of more parts and more complexity. It wasn't bad with the 7.3l, but the 6.4l and even 6.0l diesels are a different can of worms. A new DPF for the 6.4l is $2k minimum.
How big is your boat? I know it wasn't one of your choices but the 5.4L V8 might be a good alternative if you're only towing a couple of times a year. Gas mileage will be considerably better based on what has been posted here.

It's not much better. Maybe 1-2 MPG, but a huge power drop.
