For a front disc brake swap on my 66 f-250 I went to the junk yard and pulled the spindles (with the ibeams), along with some other parts off of a 78-79 f-250, now several months later, when i went to the auto part store to pick up rotors and calipers and the guy asked if i was looking for single or dual piston calipers, and said that they don't fit the same spindles. I can't remember what calipers were on the truck i pulled from or what spindles i have. Any help would be appreciated.
Are the spindles for the HD trucks larger diameter? I would assume you will need bearings as well. Measure your spindles and see if the bearing diameters are different and maybe you can figure out what you have that way? Just a suggestion, not really sure it will work though.
Seems like you missed a few parts on your junkyard trip. Are you able to go back and get the parts you need? You should have gotten the calipers and not left them there.
Also, there is some attaching hardware, etc that would have been nice to have as well. I think you should try to go back and get all the parts you needed or this will be an expensive conversion.
I get chastised for my stand on buying your donor, then come here and read yet another thread like this one.
Fellow owners stop advocating going to the junk yard and buying parts here & there. If you want an upgrade bad enough you can find a way. You need to make some kind of plan to pull it off. You may have to rent space for a couple months to store your donor. I suggest 6 months, to allow a little more time to sell parts not needed. Many times you can make money selling parts and the upgrade become very affordable.
When you start playing with I can't you really can't.
Buy a complete donor truck, it will come with every part needed and keep it until you have your upgrade finished. You will know what year to ask for parts for. You will find it easy to pass along to a new owner that everything under the chassis is 19xx and I'm not sure.
I would even say at the very minimum grab the VIN code off of the truck at the wreckers and most parts stores can help you with your parts search, just take you camera and take a pic of the door sticker.
