Steering over correction?

Hello again great and helpful people!

I have an 83 F250, with a 460. I'm having a steering issue.

I replaced basically the front suspension and steering gear box. Now it seems to be easily over correcting itself and not correcting itself as it drives.

As in, I'll correct it from veering left and then it goes too much right, and then I correct it and it goes too much to the left. Not dangerously, but annoyingly.

Could that mean my brand new steering gear box is too tight? too loose? I know I can adjust it with the nut (forgot which way though), so hopefully that's it.

Also, I wonder if my PS Pump is going. When I finally get the truck to idle slow (that's another issue for another day), there is a clicking noise. It could be the plug wires maybe, but it sounds like it's coming from the PS Pump. It's the original pump and the truck has approx 113K on it. It doesn't show much signs of being bad, outside of the noise and the aforementioned wandering/over correcting.

I'm wondering if there are clear signs to look for. I'll probably eventually just replace the PS Pump once my finances are clearer, but I want to know if it's a "do it now" thing or not.

I admit that it could just be that I'm not used to driving it (I rarely drive it), but my brother noticed the same thing as I did. He also mentioned how the steering was tight (in his opinion) and the transmission was super smooth.
Thanks for the help! Sorry if it's not clear.

If it were mine, I'd want to get a front end alignment.

You do not have enough caster in the frontend. He's right, get it aligned.

Sure sounds like that to me. Want to see the effects of bad caster just watch the wheels wobble on a bad shopping cart sometime. Take it back and tell them what it's doing. While your at it get a printout to.

I have heard of this happening once in awhile, not very often though; the balljoints can get rusty and hang the frontend up, and also if it's 4x4, the front u-joints can rust and lock up, causing the steering to bind.

dumb question, that's not part of the tie-rod ends, right? Those are on top and the bottom of the tires (not literally on top of the tires I mean)?

Ball joints are on top & bottom, yes.

Most quickie lube tire shops will not do a caster alignment. On these trucks. It requires too much work. You will probably have to find a real frame and alignment shop.
