You could always get another plate with the correct and get a bonded title. The DMV could also figure out who was the last person with the truck registered to the correct vin. It all depends on how much work they feel like doing
In Indiana on a truck that old you have a check run on the VIN. If the truck comes back clean they will issue a title to you. Problem for you is what is the VIN?

Ask him for the VIN on the drivers door then go to Fordification and decode it. You'll know right away if it's the right VIN. Too valuable of a truck to walk away from. If you're not interested pm me the details and I'll go buy it.
