simple carburetor question: YF or YFA?

Hello all - I have a 1965 Mercury 250 (Canadian version of the F250) with a 1975 300ci inline 6 engine. It has a Carter single barrel carb on it which I'd like to replace due to poor emissions readings at idle (we get tested up here in Vancouver). My Ford emissions technician has identified the carburetor as the problem. I'll probably have to order a carb from California, so my question is: is it the Carter YF or the Carter YFA? I believe my current carb is the YF, but if there's anything I can look for to confirm that I'd appreciate your input.

I don't know how your cars are tested where you live but I used to get used cars ready for a dealership and they had to be certified as meeting pollution standards before they could be resold.

The equipment I used had a clip on sensor that went on the tailpipe and then read out the pollution numbers. There wasn't one carburetor car or light truck that couldn't pass that test with a little tinkering on the idle/air screw assy on the base of the carb.

That was back in the 1980's and I'm sure things are a little more sophisticated these days but if you can get access to the test equipment you may be able to adjust your present carburetor so it will pass.

The YF was used in California starting about 1967. The YFA is a later model feedback carb which I don't believe you are looking for.

That's what I've been told by a couple of other Ford truck owners regarding the idle screw. My truck passes with flying colours EXCEPT for hydrocarbon emissions in idle mode, where it's just a bit too high. So when I go back for my pre-test test with the Aircare technician at the Ford dealership, I want to be ready with some adjustment info, but just in case I think I'll spring for a new carb for back-up! Thanks for your input - especially as it confirms what others have suggested.

Great! There's a bewildering array of info about these YF carbs as I guess they were used on just about everything at one time - or so it seems! I didn't think the YFA sounded right, so thanks again for your info.

GOT,

Maybe I have "got" some good news for you... just a little bit of southern humor.

Recently, I purchased a Carter YF for my truck. It was ordered online from RockAuto.com and their line of remanufactured carburetors is from a company in Canada. The company's name is Autoline and they have a web site. The pricing was fair, the quality was outstanding as was the packaging. So, maybe you do not have to order from California? Go to RockAuto and take a look. It will ask for what application and you will need to select whatever year you desire, to best meet the emmission standards. The computer controlled models, also referred to as "feed-back" are 1984-1986, for the 49 state models and possibly a couple of years earlier for California vehicles.

When I had to get mine to pass, I had to lean out the idle a little bit more than was "driveable". It bogged and stumbled a little bit on the way to the testing center, passed, and then I richened up the idle a hair once I got back home.

@1986F150six - done! Thanks for that tip - it looks like Rock Auto is in the states but their website was a breeze and they accept Paypal. Took 5 minutes, and should be here next week.

@1986F150six - will do! I'm sitting by the door waiting for Fedex...(not!), but it sure would be nice to get this solved and get on with other items! Thanks again for that Rock Auto tip - I'm going to let them know how it turns out as well. Great forum, great trucks, great help!
