oil filter O ring

I posted this over in the Expy section but know alot of the guys over here have alot of mechanical experience. Any help would be appreciated.

This is baffling me. I changed the wife's oil tonight (2007 EXPY EL). Everything went fine, nornal oil change. When cleaning up I noticed the rubber ring on the old oil filter was missing. Looking back the filter was tighter then usual getting it off. When I took the old filter off I wiped down the surface lilke I always do and didn't notice or feel anything unusual. I have searched high and low for the missing O ring to no avail. The truck is running fine and the oil pressure is fine. I got under the truck whille it was running to check the filter. It appeared to be seated fine and there was no sign of any leakage. The only thing I can think of is the old ring was stuck to the filter mount and the new ring seated against it. Is this possible and is it dangerous???

The o ring on the filter cap itself?

The new filter should have came with one.....and it should be replace every change...Do you always do it yourself?

I assume you are talking gas motor. In the past when I did that, I removed the filter again and made sure I only had one gasket in there. Why take a chance that 2 are not better than one?

I think there would be a better chance of leakage between the 2 gaskets.

The seal on the old filter probably stayed on the filter mount, so now you have two seals on there. Take the filter back off and check.

This happened on a Toyota of my sons and it failed at the worst possible time, on I-80 outside Reno at 110 outside. Dumped all the engine oil on the freeway. So you want to get it right.

^^^^ It's better to learn from someone who has been, than from someone who hasn't been.

Thanks for sharing David.
