dana ?

ok well i bought a truck and there are no tags on the rearend's
it is a 1978 ford 4x4
i am not even sure how to tell if it is a 44 or 60 or what?
The gear ratio is supposed to be on the gear I did find some letters and numbers but nothing that says 3.55 or anything even close

so the first step is toknow which dana it is
I already have it apart and have put new Ujoints in the axles but the inner seals were bad

thanks for reading this and if you can help me please

For ratio divide number of teeth on pinion into number of teeth on ring gear and you'll have the ratio. Front and rear will be slightly different, bit real close like 3:50 rear and 3:54 front, 4:10 rear 4:11 front. Providing what size truck you have will help someone assist you(F-100/F-350 etc)

lift the truck in the air. make a chalk mark on the side of the drive shaft and the top of the tire. spin the tire and count how many revolutions it makes in relation to the number of revolutions the drive shaft makes. This is your gear ratio.

If you have a dana 60 there will be the number 60 on the upper rear of the axle housing pumpkin.

The gear ratio is not just stamped into the ring gear. The number of teeth is though. The first number is the number of teeth on the drive pinion. The second number is the number of teeth on the ring gear. Divide the 2 and you have your gear ratio. This is a picture of a Dana 60. It uses king pins that are held in by 4 bolts. The Dana 44 uses ball joints, which just have a big nut holding them in.

I have the complete shop manuals for 72 trucks on CD in .pdf format. I will e-mail them to you if address is provided. Some things just didn't change much.

dana 44 w 373 gears

took gears out and had a shop show me the numbers and it is a 350 not 373 sorry gear ratio with dana 44 front end tried the drive line mark and could not get it to work for me lol but thanks for the help changed all bearings and seals and axle ujoints at home still not leaking but only drove it 5 miles now i got other problems with oil pressure and a real quiet knock when at idle
speed 40 or 50 mph and when stoped oil pressure falls out reads none once it is warm soon as imove it jumps up to the O on normal
any ideas
it has no knock when accelerating or decelerating just at a coast and sounds real good when first started no noises
what did i get my self into lol
