Hello all, I have an a.c leak. It usually takes about 2-3 weeks for all the refrigerant to leak out and start blowing warm air. I have used stop leak with no luck. I want to use some dye and a uv light, but dont have the extra money for the light right now. My question is , after charging the system, and getting ice cold air..... I shut the engine off, and I hear a hissing sound which lasts for about 30 - 45 seconds. It seems like its coming from the dryer area, but when I spray soapy water around all the fittings ,I get no bubbles? The sound is like air escaping...... Is that a normal sound to hear after shutting down, or could this be the source or the leak somehow? Thanks for your help Bill
I think you can use a can with red dye in it and that should be quite visible with just the naked eye.
Sometimes either the high or low refrigerant fittings will develope a leak through the valve core inside the fittings.
If it is low now, then install a can of the refrigerant with the red dye and see if it shows some leaks.
Good to know. Do the valve cores in the fittings screw in like on a tire? That might explain why I dont see air bubbles with the cap being on the fitting......
Bill,
Yes the "valve cores" do screw in just like on tire valve stems.
You can find replacements at Thermo King if there is one near you.
They may even have the core removal tool if it is different from tire valve cores.
Good luck,
you can try looking at your frame area where the evaporator drains if there is any kind of oily residue its possible your evaporator is leaking. Also check for oil residue at the compressor and condenser fittings.
