Still looking for any info regarding some engine swaping into my 88 Bronco II. I've gotten replies regarding a 2.8 from a ranger into the B2, which sounds like a possibility. Any thoughts on an I6 from a ford van of a similar year (not sure exactly what year though)? The tranny on the B2 needs to be swaped too. It's an auto now, and I'd dedfinitely like to keep 4 wheel drive on it so i'm assuming an auto from a 4x4 B2 or ranger would be the best solution for that one. Any additional ideas regarding the tranny delima would be much appreciated. Thanks
Surf over to jamesduff.com and start with some good ideas. Check out all of the archives here, most of your questions will already be answered and it makes for good reading. You will know more about your truck then you thought was possible.
Make sure you have a useable transmission C-4 or C-6 if Auto.
The 2.8 is an ok engine. Throttlebody F.I. tons of emissions but reliable for me. I've got an 84 B II with 363,000 km without having the Engine or Tranny apart and NO RUST !!! But I do fight with emission testing every year. Good Luck these little trucks can be a blast and they sure do grow on you.

I like the Bronco II 2.9 L (EFI). Is there a reason you don't want this engine?
I guess what I'm trying to say is you should be able to find a 2.9L with tranny (and xfer case if 4x4) at a wrecking yard and slip it right into your Bronco II.
If your B2 has a 2.9 EFI and it's running properly, slow acceleration is probably because of your differential gears. The B2s had three different gear ratios, 3.45, a 3.73 and a 4.10. All were available with or without limited slip (rear only).
put a 4.0 from an explorer in mine. bolts right in but you do need the radiator and hoses from an explorer(these also fit nicely), fuel line will need spliced in to existing lines, and computer and harness will also need to be wired in( though they mount in the same place which helps).
I'm in California and we have the stupidest smog laws in the whole world! If you have the opportunity to move to California, I would highly recommend you DON'T move to California.
California law requires a vehicle to have "original" smog equipment and engine in it. Doesn't matter if you can make your engine burn cleaner and get better gas mileage, if it's not original equipment it doesn't matter.
With that in mind, it's very difficult to make engine changes here. Bottom line is California smog laws really suck and politicians out here suck too. If you ever see a California person running for a US Government office, don't vote for him or her!!
Glad to hear you were able to put a 4.0 in yours. That's great!

I'll second that!!! In California, 1974 and newer vehicles must abide by smog law and it's rediculous! I say they shouldn'y be allowed to open the hood. What's under the hood is private property. Only what's coming out of the exhaust pipe should be their concern. I mean what does it matter what you're running as long as it passes emissions??? California politicians know this but they've been in bed with the factories for too many years to change. They want old cars off the streets. If they can make us give them up, the factories (leading cause of smog) will buy them and get smog credits for them so they can legaly increase the amount of crap they put in the air every year. It's disgusting
Well, you have heard just about everything about the V6 and V8 swap ins, so I'll just make this short and sweet. No, you can not fit an I6 into a BII. Simply put, there isn't enough room. You would have to cut out the middle of the firewall and move it back about 8 inches. Granted, that would be a great way to go, but there is barely room to put 4 cylinders in line, let alone adding 2 more to it. Sorry for the bad news.
