A couple of years ago I did a tranny swap on my 86 Ranger. I went from the A4LD to a 5 speed. When I did this I swaped T-cases at the same time. After this my speedometer said i was doing 65 and I was really only going about 46 and the engine was just singing at about 4500 RPM. I got to wondering and switched the T-case back to the original that was behind the A4LD and everything went back to normal.
I always thought that a T-case was a T-case when it came to these trucks. I am in the planning stage for a lift and bigger tires and was wondering just what it is that I have here. If these cases have that big of a differance in gearing I will just switch them again instead of doing a gear swap in the axles.
I guess a little info on the truck would help as well. It's an 86 STX 4X4 ect. cab, 2.9, origianlly had A4LD (now 5speed, and 4.10 gears in the diffs.
Sombody please throw me a bone and tell me just what I have here.
That was my first thought as well but the engine RPM is what didn't make sense to me. In order to get about 45 MPH the truck was running at 4500 RPM when I put the original t-case back in I was able to get 65 MPH at just under 3000 RPM
It could have been locked in but I doubt it. It is a touch drive system w/auto hubs. I would think if it was locked in 4LO I would have been in 4X4. I guess the only way to really get a correct answer for this is to just put the thing back in and see what it does. If it was just stuck in lo I will not be out anything more than a couple hours of my time.
