Help! Black smoke

I have about 36,000 miles on the truck, and now I am getting Black smoke under acceleration all the time, not just on take off. Local dealer says its normal. I know this isnt the case when its constant. My gut says DPF is the issue. I have searched the threads and have not seen any posts with this issue. Any help would be great thank you.

Most likely the DPF is cracked. To be sure they (the tech) should be checking for an overfueling condition.

You..should be checking and monitoring your fluid levels, especially your oil level for indications of an overfill condition.

Time to go somewhere else or get a different SA.

So, just got back from dropping the truck off at the dealer. I explained the severe black smoke under acceleration with no load, and show them the soot covered tail pipe. SA: "weird, we have not had this problem with the 6.4 at all." So I am a bit concerned. I explained the possibilities of a cracked DPF, and or a overloading fuel injector. By the way I am a Service Manager for a Mack and Fuso dealer, so I am very familiar with both these types of failures. Hopefully they will find the issue and be able to repair it. I will let you all know what they say. Thank you for your info / input.

Never heard of it before...yeah those fish are biting.

I'd look for the DPF to be replaced.

I printed a few of the threads here relating to cracked DPF's and all and took them with me. My SA has always been good to me, even with my old 6.0, and I know he will contact Ford and anyone he can to get to the bottom of it. We will see. Let you all know how it turns out.

Got a call from my SA. DPF is cracked and being replaced, also there is a leaking / overloading fuel injector. They are going to replace the DPF, and install ALL new injectors under warranty. I will let you all know how it all turns out.

Great...always need to drill down as to why an overfueling is going on.

After the repair I'd suggest an oil change followed up by an OA.

They are changing the oil, and also the fuel filter, and installing new oil. All under warranty. They thought only one or two injectors were failing, but decided to replace them all under a good will authorization from the Ford rep. Look forward to getting my truck back.

Wow, sounds like you have an excellent dealership! I don't know if all of them would have checked upstream and found the injector issues. Many just want to replace the DPF and get you out the door.

OK, Just got home from picking my truck up. Wow! I forgot how much power this thing used to have! I have a question though. How often should I expect to see this thing regen? The dealer did not have a clue on how often?

anywhere from 100-600 miles is in the normal range. Look for it to be around 100 miles for a couple then it even out.

BTW, my diagnostic fee

My DPF was just replaced as well. It was cracked since around 26k, but I let it go until the 49k mark (50k emissions warranty) since it was only sooting the tailpipe and never had noticeable soot/smoke under acceleration.

My dealer did say it was their first DPF replacement, and they fumbled a bit with the paperwork, but Ford approved the warranty replacement. Based on the limited soot seen and the lack of notable fuel dilution of the oil I don't think I have any overfueling issues.

Along with the new DPF I also got the new 11B23+ flash, and it appears they have changed the regen strategy from waiting for the DPF to load up and then hoping for a long regen, to more frequent and much shorter regens. I suppose starting the new strategy on a fresh DPF is good.

Yeah I noticed the same thing with the new flash and short regens. Like 6 miles or so now.
