what sizes cam

I'm wanting to put a bigger cam in my 300 six,but need help finding the right one and the best one.I had the engine bored 30 over and have put a offenhauser intake with a holley 390 cfm carb. also have put headers and a mallory dist.and coil.It is in a 69 ford 1/2 ton short bed with manual trans with granny low,its also has power steering,power brake and a/c. Please help with the cam and what else I need. The engine was rebuilt and has 7500 miles on it . Thanks

Selecting a cam requires a bit of research. Browse the Comp Cams, Isky cams, and Crowler cams sites and read.

Then you decide what you want/expect from you truck, ie radical racing, mild power, medium range power for towing/hauling, or just to sound cool when you drive thru the burger joint. Then decide.

That translates into a wider rpm range, better idle quality, and higher engine vacuum, but at the cost of less torque at low and midrange rpm. A cam with a narrow LSA (104-108 degrees) offers greater low and midrange torque production, but with a narrower operating range, a choppy idle, and less engine vacuum.

For the street, you want a cam that offers a compromise--decent idle quality, respectable vacuum for operating power brakes and such, and good overall power production. separation. Again, much depends on the overall engine combination and intended use, but as a general rule, cams with a 110 to 112 degree LSA offer good power and decent street manners.

IMHO, you really can't find a better all-around cam than the Comp 260. It has more duration than the Clifford 264 duration cam, WITH a 110* LSA, which will give you plenty of vacuum for brakes and A.trans. The only thing it doesn't have is the loping sound at idle, which, btw, you'll pay for by sacrificing vacuum. For a daily driver, with monster towing/hauling abiltiy, with an eye on the gas pump, IMO it is the best cam out there.

Of course if you want that loping idle for the burger stand drive through, then you have to go with the Comp 268, or the Isky 262, or another more aggressive cam.

Thanks Again,I don't do much of nothing with the truck except drive to car shows and your Saturday nite party at the sock hops so I would like a cam with a aggressive sound.If you get the aggressive or any other cam do you need to change lifters and rockers for that cam,and how about break in time and what else do I need to do.... Thanks

what compression ratio did you build your engine to???
that will be a factor in what cam to purchase, that along with the great comments above.
the higher compression the more cam you can get away with.
for the best low end and mileage the smaller cam ie less aggressive would be best, if you have a higher than stock compression you may have to go with mid-grade fuel to prevent spark knock on hot days..
the days of having a smooth or mild lopy idle with a aggresive cam is still possible, with hydraulic variable duration lifters.
with variable duration lifters, more oil pressure the more aggresive the cam profile gets untill full lifter action takes over.
so low rpm, more torque, high rpm more horses.
caution, with variable duration lifters the weight, temp and type of oil will make differences in the idle vacuum and amount of loping during idle. which can be a real pain...

watch the language dude. f250 has helped me out in picking out a cam and other situtation. you just gotta do your own research nothing is gonna be handed to on a silver platter and sometimes his reply do tend sound mean but i think its the way we read it.
