Get the VIN and ask the dealership for an OASIS report. That will show what kind of warranty work has been done to the truck. Check under the truck for excessive oil leaks on the bell housing.

All the year models have different quirks but most were fixed by the 06/07 year models. Oil cooler causes EGR cooler problems. Using aftermarket filters causes as many problems. Look/ask for maintenance records. If the motor is TOO clean/detailed look closely at all the nooks and crannies. Take it to a qualified 6.0 mechanic and have him run diagnostics on the motor. Have him check the engine coolant/engine oil temperature delta at operating temperature 65mph no load. If it's over 15* then the oil cooler needs changed. How many miles on the truck?

Yes

If you haven't already spend some time reading the posts in the tech folder. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/303583-6-0l-diesel-tech-folder.html

Follows are some general recommendations:
· Get an Oasis report and CarFax report - if either points to a history of mechanical problems walk away
· Check for coolant puking
· Look for a truck with no aftermarket performance modifications
· Try to find out as much as possible about the routine maintenance and compare the history to the Ford recommendations - routine maintenance is the key to long term reliability
· Check out post #22 of the following thread: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/87...uy-6-oh-2.html

That's real good advice. I pretty much did that. Then I had it checked out at Ford Service( I bought it from a GM dealer) and they said I got a real good truck. And still has warranty until May of next year. So it's definitely worth the effort.

Don't forget, if any work was done by anyone except Ford, it will NOT show up on the OASIS.

Ok Here's a new question just talked with the sales man at the lot and he said they drove it about 50 miles and it ran good just missed alittle? They say it has 2 bad injectors? I think there crazy my old 7.3 had 1 bad injector and it drove awful I'm thinking fuel filter stopping up. Any suggestions ? I go to look and drive it in the morning and go from there. Thanks for everyone's help and comments

I'd run some SeaFoam through it before I'd pay the man. My was missing and I bought 3 cans of it. Pulled the fuel filter and suck the fuel out of the bowl. Replaced the dry filter and filled bowl with straight SeaFoam. Made sure I was going to change the oil in 50 miles or so and put 1 1/2 cans into the oil filler. Put rest in fuel tank. Ran for 50 miles and changed oil. By the time that my fuel tank was empty (it was full when I started) it wasn't missing at all.

Get something to monitor the motor.

Scangauge II or an Edge Insight. Check everything you can. Then when you do buy your truck you will have gauges.

Cheap insurance.

Used Diesel...

My Dad runs a 03 F350 6.0 with 125k miles on it now. Overall it has been a great truck for him but has had a few issues:
1. EGR replacement (common in 6.0 diesels)
2. Fuel Injectors dropping out (2 injectors sticking). Early '03s commonly have injector issues.

Ford wanted to replace the injectors (big $)...but we ran many tanks of diesel additive in the fuel and it cleared up. I added hot shot diesel additive in the oil as additional maintenance per the info I got from the guys here on the forum.

I've got a '05 F250 4x4 that I purchased used last year w/80k miles. Im learning of the issues as I run into them. I had to replace the ball joints at 87K. Im now experiencing the EGR symptoms at 88k.

The trucks are strong and run well...when maintained well...with the exception of a few known issues such as the EGR, etc...

Injectors are about $330/ea from a dealership through the service department plus the labor to change them. I'd have it diagnosed fully before I'd take a salesman's word about 2 bad injectors. You could be getting into a can of worms you DON"T want to deal with. Just my $0.02.

FWIW--personally I like the 03 motors except for the ICP sensor problem. The performance is a LOT better on a stock motor than the later model motors.

I will have it put an a dianostic computer at a ford dealer before I buy it. Just so happens there's one up the street from where the truck is and I don't trust car salesmen at all! Just trying to do my homework before I buy I am the type that don't rush in to things like this I've been looking for about a year now but I've been looking for a 7.3 that I can't seem to find around here so that why I'm even looking at the 6.0 because there plentyful around here
