Hi, newbie here. I just bought an 2005 F 150 supercab, 2 wd. with 75k. It needs brakes all 4 corners. Is it possible to just replace the pads? the rotors don't look too bad, no rings or grooves. didn't realize you had to replace front wheel bearings with the rotors. $$$$ they want $130. ea for after market rotors. thanks
As long as the rotors still look fine, I would just put pads on them an go with it. Those front rotors are a pain in the butt. Not only is the whole unit made together, you are supposed to replace the spindle nut every time you take it off, which is another $20 per side. I replaced front rotors and pads on my moms 07 F-150 at about 70,000 as well. She is at 120,000 and looking back I should have just left the original rotors on there.
yes it is possible to just replace the pads. But at 75K your rotors are probably pretty worn. But, I guess if you don't have any shake in your wheel during braking or bed hop then they are not warped too bad. I have within the last year put new rotors and pads on my front and new rotors and pads on my rear. I must say I am glad I have a 4X4. That 2wd front rotor job sounds like a PIA. The brake job on the 4X4 is pretty easy. The rear rotors are not badto replace, as soon as you figure out how to adjust the e-brake and get it loose enough to let the rotor come off. I had to learn that one.
thanks for the replies, guys. i'm all ears on the e-brake release tip, bigunit.
On the back side of the hub you will see a rubber plug near the bottom. You have to take that plug out, then you will see a star wheel down inside that hole. I think they sell a special tool to adjust it easier, but you can get a long flat screwdriver in there and turn it. It's not easy, but it can be done. You want to turn the star wheel down towards the ground to loosen the e-brake. Basically they e brake is like a drum brake and the pads of it contact the inside of the rear rotors. Mine was so tight that I couldn't remove the rear rotors without loosening it. It's up to you on the adjustment once you get the new rotors on, obviously you don't want it too tight, it will drag and that ain't good. I left mine pretty loose, in six years of driving my truck, I have never put the emergency/parking brake on. In my opinion, if you have don't have a stick shift, it's not that big a deal.
