Hi all - wondering if it is standard practice these days to always replace rotors when changing brake pads? I realize they are pretty cheap these days. I was inspecting my brakes yesterday and will be needing front pads and the rotors didn't look all that bad, but it seems cheap insurance to slap on some new rotors while its all apart..?
What are you driving? It costs $10 to $15 to turn down a rotor. Where are you getting rotors for that money?
I called 3 different local auto parts stores, they said they don't turn rotors at all, no one bothers doing it anymore because new rotors are so cheap these days, they have them for my Escape for like $31 apiece.
You might as well buy the cheapie vs. the OEM with some, as some OEM rotors warp if you look at the wrong. But if your OEM rotors didn't warp, you may be in for a new experience with the cheapies.
I must say, I bought a cheapie for the back of my Explorer, and it seems to have worn ok and no warpage...unusual for rears to warp, so perhaps no surprise there.
Do shops even turn rotors anymore? I don't recall that being done when I had brake jobs doneon other vehicles in recent years, they just slapped new rotors on.
We turn rotors alot when they are the OEM rotors because they don't warp as bad as the aftermarket (Autozone) rotors. But the first thing we do is check to see how close the rotor is to its safety level because they can only be turned down so much before they are no longer considered safe.
If you have an O'Reily Auto Parts in your area, might check them out. I had the rotors on my 97 turned there last spring. Also maybe check your Yellow Pages, probably under Brake Parts or Repair.
