Today the outside temp is about 107. My buddy has a 99 7.3 4x4. He text me and said at a stop light trans temp climbs to 220. driving is about 200. That seems too high. Im thinking the cooler is clogged. Any suggestions? Thanks
It is located on the side of the tranny and connects the inlet and outlet of the cooler lines. If your cooler become clogged the bypass opens because of the pressure and still allows fluid to flow and lube the tranny. I unhooked the outlet line from the tranny before the cooler and had no flow that was how I knew it was bad. Also had help from Mark. Do a search on tranny flushing and you will learn where the lines go and other good info.
The stock trans.cooler is very small, way too small for these trucks.....the cooler on the left is a stock 7.3 cooler, the one on the right is a stock cooler from an'06 F250...a 6.0 cooler...
i thought if ti got to 220 on the pan it was burnt, what temp is bad?
i have a aerforec gauge that reads the temp from the pcm how hot can it there before it is bad?
My BTS was at 200 in traffic today @110* ambient.
Thats with my Tru-cool cooler and an upgraded OTW radiator, (my 26 row 6.0 cooler is still laying on the kitchen table....)
Adding a larger cooler is a great Idea, but My original trans lasted 240k with just the little stock cooler, so 200* temps no longer bother me.
We have gotten spoiled with the quest to have low trans temps...

Ya know Frank, you might be right with the quest for lower temp thing, while towing our TT in hills and mountains this summer,96* outside temp my trans temp stayed around 160/165,but when we left the highway and got in stopped traffic(more stopping than going anyway),the trans temps went up to 180/190ish and I started tripping, and mine being a 99.5 I don't have the OTW cooler, but all in all I knew it was OK.....

The fluid will start burning above 400°F. That's not a typo, I said above four hundred degrees Fahrenheit.

Ford specs say it can run all day long with NO problems up to 220°F. You can go up to 250°F for no more than 1/2 hour at a time. If you get above 250°F you should find a safe place to stop and idle or fast idle in park or neutral to cool the trans.
