Question 84 f250 transmission+engine problem

I have just recently pulled the inline 6 engine on my 84 f250 to change piston rings and gaskets.

i have the engine back in the truck but no matter what I try, the transmission willl not connect to the engine again.

The engine and trans. will come together intill there is about 1.5cm of a gap in between the engine and trans. and the holes for the bolts are shifted to the right about 2mm off so the bolts will not go in.

its seems that if I remove the shift lever from the transmission, I will have enough room to tilt the transmission to be perfectly equal to match up with the engine. but there lies another problem. I cant find out how to remove the shift lever.

I have been trying to get them together for about 2 weeks now. so far nothing i have tried has worked.

Manual or automatic transmission?

Manual transmissions require PRECISE insertion, a transmission jack is generally used for this purpose - allows minute vertical, horizontal & tilting adjustments.

Assuming this is a manual......if you can get to within 15mm, it sounds as if the clutch plate is off center just enough to prevent the input shaft from going into the spigot bearing.

Once you are in that far, can you operate the clutch lever somehow to free the clutch plate & get lined up?

If not, you might have to re-center the clutch plate with a pilot tool first.

The spigot bearing?

You guys from down under make me laugh sometimes.

Here, a spigot is a different name for a water faucet; we would call that the Pilot Bearing.

You mean my tyres

I think we've (NZ & Australia) adopted a lot of British automotive terms down here.
I didn't realize that until I noticed English posters on FTE using the same names & spelling as us, where there'd have been a different US version.

Sorry about this, FORDbmxcracker!

He said something about a shift lever in the way, so i am going to assume he has a manual tranny. Let's also assume since it's a 84, it has a hydraulic clutch.

While you are under the truck wiggling and pushing on the tranny, get someone else to push in on the clutch pedal in the cab. It might go then.
