Clutch is not a major deal, other than getting the transmission in and out. For me the easiest way to change the pilot bearing is to remove the flywheel and drive it out from the back. The flywheel and clutch are both bolt on deals...the new clutch comes with an alignment tool to get the bolts started.
that the inpection plate off, take the starter out, make sure the transmission will clear the downpipe i had to take mine off, unbolt the drive shafts, take the transmission to engine bolts out, make sure u unplug all electrical connections and pull the shift tower and transfer case handle, i was able to leave the tranfer case on but u may need to unbolt it, support the trans with a trans jack or somesort of jack, unbolt the cross member, lower the jack until u can slide the trans out, make sure when u put it back together do not force the input shaft into the pilot bearing/bushing i lube the bearing and the input before i put it back in it may take some time to get everything lined back up take ur time i probably missed some stuff but thats the basics
Changing the clutch is easy. Moving that heavy transmission is the hard part. Make sure you get your shift boot tightened back up all the way. You would be amazed how loud the motor sounds with a loose shift boot.
I dont think I got a new pilot bushing with my kit....is this a critical part of the install?
Unless you enjoy pulling the tranny I'd vote yes it is important. I couldn't believe they stuck that cheap piece of plastic in front of a transmission that big. I'd consider upgrading to a kevlar bushing.
eff. wtf. I thought its supposed to come in the god damn kit.
edit- kindof off topic, but while under my truck I was having a peak, and where my egt probe goes into the up pipe there is evidence of a leak...now could this cause a boost leak or no?
I don't have one, but that's not the cheap factory POS. It looks like if you combine your arrow piece with the piece to it's lower right that might work for a throw out bearing. Maybe someone with these parts will chime in, but the factory part looks kind of like those two pieces combined except it is all one big piece of plastic.
As long as you're going through this much trouble you should check out (or go ahead and replace) the rear main seal. I think they're only around $35 and you'll already have the transmission out of the way.
Have you replaced a clutch before? There's not that many parts involved so it's not that big a deal. Due to the dirt floor in my barn not handling a transmission jack well, and the fact I have the money I just paid someone to replace my clutch. But I used to do it all the time in my older trucks when you could just manhandle the transmission.
Looking at your picture it's hard to tell if thats the throw out bearing, but I'd guess the only part your missing is an alignment tool for the clutch when bolting on the new pressure plate. If your worried go by your local auto parts store and look at a throw out bearing that fits your truck and compare it to what you have.
Or better yet we'll just keep bumping this post to the top of the list until one of the guys that can answer your question chimes in.
got the alignment tool in the kit. and no Ive never changed one like this. one of the times I was swapping motors in my '79 I changed the clutch, it wont be bad, just wanted to make sure I had eveything. anyway, thatnks for your help
