the hood on my 59 f 100 weighs at least 300 pounds, should it? i got an estimate on paint and body work and the guy seems to think it weighs way too much and must have bondo caked under the heat shield the last owner put on it. it makes sense, why would the guy try to hold heat in the engine compartment? anyway, before i go looking for anew hood is the body guy right?
Dont have any personal experience with the 59 hoods but I had a 51 hood that felt twice as heavy as a regular hood.
the po had covered the inside with that rubberized ? undercoating spray, it was really thick too. luckily it was starting to come off in places so wouldn't have been too much work to clean it off.
I can't imagine anyone putting bondo on the underside of the hood but???
I would take some tools or small grinders, da sander or ?? with 80 grit and see whats under there??
you should also be able to tap on it in places to tell by sound and densness if there is something there??
yeah, i'm just going to have to experiment. i'm not looking for show quality but i don't want m@@co quality either. i'm worried that if i spend 4 k without taking it to the metal in a couple of years i'm going to end up with cracks. at the same time i don't want to spend 10 or 15 k for body and paint on an old hotrod truck. maybe i should get a cheap job done and see how it holds up on top of what i've got already. that way i can change the color when i get tired of it without hating myself.
i'm a big guy and it kicks my *** to lift this hood. sounds like i need a new one eother way.
i'm going to drive it. i really just need a 10 footer. i just sanded one fender and rattle canned it and i don't think i'm going to do the truck that way but the high build primer sands down to a pretty smooth finish. i'll second coat that fender tomorrow and see how straight it is with a gloss vs. primer.
If you think it is bondo under the hood, take a magnet and see if there is any metal that the magnet will stick to. If it is bondo the magnet will not stick.
