Cold Weather!!

How do I start my 1994 7.3 Turbo Diesel truck in the -26 to -30 (celsius)weather?
It's turning over...but I'll kill the batteries trying!!
Any tips, hints to starting these trucks in this weather?

Cold Weather!!

I had the same cocnerns about the 6.0L Diesel which I just ordered. I know the glow plugs are rated to -10' F, however this past winter we had almost 30 nights below zero and a few that were colder than -10' F.

At home it will be in a garage and I can also plug it in. However, when I am at work, or elsewhere overnight plugging in could be a problem.

What have other people's expirences been?

Buy two of the biggest CCA batteries you can find, use good quality winter fuel with cetane booster, use Mobil Delvac 10w 40 synthetic oil or equivalant. Cycle glow plugs twice and on second cycle count to 3 after glow plug light goes out , then crank over untill shes running. More than a half a tank of fuel does'nt hurt. I have startet my truck at -28f after sitting for 4 days in da U.P. of MI not plugged in and sitting out in the breeze.

If you don't mind spending the money, get an Espar coolant heater. Works just like plugging it in, but heats using diesel, and designed to have a very low current draw. I can't comment on pricing since I don't have one, but have heard of good results from people who own E-350 PSD's. Normally you would find info at www.espar.com/ but the website doesn't seem to be working for me. Try http://www.computrux.com/espar_heate..._air_info.html

Cold Weather!!

Thanks for all the input.
Alot of cranking yesterday finally got it started.
It's -26C this morning and I'm on my way out to start it now.
I already did what z1express said...I went out and bought 2 heavy cranking batterries about a month ago...so I know its not the Juice!!

What about this Diesel Additive for the winter months??
Is there a DIESEL Methal Hydrate or something simular??

Cold Weather!!

It's me again...The truck fired right up no problem.
My truck sat all day Thurs.,Fri.,and then Sat., it wouldn't start.
3 days of -25 without running....that didn't help.

Would still like to hear about any fuel addatives!!

I run diesels at work and I have seen a couple of cold starting aids besides the block heater. Ford had one on their farm tractors that ran on diesel fuel and preheated the intake manifold.
Cat has a metal screen that is actually an electric heater that heats the air as it goes into the intake. You may find someone marketing these for your engine.
For fuel additives power service markets an artic blend antijell fuel additive.
