I have a 2000 2.5 with 5 speed manual tranny and 4.10 with 31x10.5x15 tires and I get 25 miles/gallon of gas. With 3.73 in the rear you won't have any power going up hills or for passing so streetability will be poor
25mpg dosen't sound to bad, and the 3.73 and 4.10 are the same price. What engine mods did you do, and what is your top speed with that setup? Also how does it preform in mud?
I was going to post the first time I read this but thought I'd wait a little bit. I have a 98 4.0L 4x4 with 31" tires and 3.73 gears. It does okay, but it would feel much better and more powerful with 4.10 gears, which is what the new offroad Rangers with 31's have. My thinking is, if 3.73 gears with 31's on a 4.0L barely satisfies me, I highly doubt it would satisfy you with a 4-banger. It would probably take quite a bit to get bad mileage out of the 4 cylinder anyways. Just my thoughts....
You said you wanted a prerunner. Prerunners are designed for dirt and the desert NOT the mud....
If you want something for the mud then get a 4x4.
I have no engine mods. Don't need'em. There ain't nothing worth putting on that 4-banger because it won't help. If you want power then get a 4.0. Of course this is only my opinion.
And my truck does well in mud but I don't make it a habit to drive through mud.

About the mud, one never knows what is truly up ahead until they get stuck in it, after all it rains in SoCal too. And about the mods, i wasn't thinking much more than a K&N air filter, TBI spacer, and a gibson cat back (same as what i have on my b2).
