Ignition timing whacky!!! HELP!

I have a stock 352 with rebuilt factory dizzy. I run a Pertronix 1. When reading the timing marks on balancer; they start jumping all over the place when revved up past 30* advance. This is with vacuum advance disconnected. I tried two different timing lights. I then borrowed an older dial-in Craftsman and timing marks were steady. WTH is going on here?

Sounds like the problem is with the timing lights pickup or the plug wire breaking down at high RPM. I don't think it's a problem with the truck. You could try swaping the number one plug wire with one of the others and see if it still does it with the original timing light. Hope this helps. Does it run ok?

Look at the balancer...see if the outer pulley has "walked away" from the inner damper. If so...that could be the problem.

At the factory, a rubber gasket is placed between the pulley and damper, then the three parts are pressed together forming a one piece assembly.

Over time, the rubber gasket age cracks and/or shrinks, causing the "walk away" process.

If not caught in time, the pulley will separate from the damper, taking assorted belts and etc. along with it...could end up in the radiator core. Not pleasant!

Was that a common thing? I have seen the pulley/damper abused with a jack before but not come apart on it's own. But then I didn't have the exposure you did!

Truck runs great but a little lazy off the bottom. I will try the wire swap. Thanks!

Thanks Bill. The balancer is new and checks out fine. I was thinking the same thing.
