I replaced the drag link trying to stop the vibration in my front end but im still getting movement in my driver side tire. I was told to check the wheel bearing, is this the right thing to check and if it is bad how do i replace or fix it.
Shaking in the front end could be a lot of things.
Tire out of balance
Worn tie rod end
Worn ball joint
Worn bushings
Worn steering box
Bad shock absorber
Bad wheel bearing.
Probably other things I can't think off at the moment.
Wheel bearings are easy to check and easy to replace on the 2WD front end. If I was chasing a shaking front end problem, they would be pretty low on my list of suspects.
Edit: Also a tire with a tread separation could do it. I have had that happen multiple times (always with BF Goodrich tires). A tread separation makes the tire out of balance and out of round. It often feels fine at low speed, shakes pretty badly in the 30- 50 mph range.
This is a general rule, not always but most of the time this rule works;
With the front wheel off the ground, grab it at 9 o clock and 3 o clock and wiggle it to see if you have play. Then grab the wheel at 12 o clock and 6 o clock and wiggle it.
Play only at 9 and 3 indicates a bad tie rod end or drag link.
Play only at 12 and 6 indicates a bad ball joint.
Play at both 9 and 3 and 12 and 6 can indicate a loose wheel bearing.
i just replaced the wheel bearing in mine , it made a very distinctive grinding sound started just occasionally then all the time and as stated even when the full weight of the ruck on the tire i could wiggle it and feel play in the tire, replaceing the wheel bearing isnt too bad as long as you have the tools, mine had a snap ring and i hade to buy a spindle socket 20.00 at autozone
