Hey fellas... It's come time for me to replace my EGR valve and I have searched the tech folder and it didn't give me anything. Has anyone done a write-up on replacing one? With Pictures?
Replacing the EGR Valve is 2 bolts and pull it off.
Maybe you mean the EGR cooler - THAT is a project which would
have pictures? Just try search using quotes: "egr valve" or "egr cooler" you'll have plenty to read through.
It smokes at idle and really smokes under throttle. Runs a little rough at idle but smooth otherwise. I'm going to hook my tuner up this afternoon and see what codes it's spitting. I'm just dreading the possibility of head gasket/EGR cooler/Oil cooler etc. Turbo has about 35k miles on it and it's still providing good boost.
Sounds like an injector to me. You can pull the oil dipstick to see if the level has risen and smells like fuel. It would be in your best interest to have a pro look at it to be sure. A leaky injector can cause a lot of damage if it's left unchecked for even a short amount of time. If you start to hear any unusual knocking, shut it down. It may be starting to hydrolock.
Good news is that it shouldn't have an affect on your coolers or gaskets, and after the bad injector is replaced(along with an oil change), chances are there won't be any other associated/coincidental problems.
There really isn't a reason to replace injectors that don't show signs of a problem. My X has had 3 injectors replaced so far. A couple went at around 30K miles(these leaked really bad and almost hydro'd the motor), and 1 around 60K or so. The 5 originals have 100K+ on them now and are working great. Maintaining steady fuel pressure(stock fuel system is barely enough), and changing the oil on a regular basis can keep even the old style injectors(which we both have) working well for a long time.
The work to change a 6.0 injector isn't very involved and can easily be accomplished in the driveway.
I, unfortunately, don't have the time nor extra vehicle necessary to take this one on myself. I can't afford to have my truck dismantled in my driveway if I end up being overmatched. There are a few shops here in town that are reputable that I'll call in the morning.
Thanks again for the input.. J really appreciate it.
Turned out to be 2 bad injectors. I'm having the guy replace all 4 on the bank while he's in there. I figure all the OT I've been working lately might as well go to good use.
The guy is a Ford Master Tech and specializes on powerstrokes so I trust his expertise. I should have it back either tonight or tomorrow with an oil change on the top of my priority list!
Glad you got it checked out quickly. Low fuel pressure conditions will let the oil side of these injectors hammer and ruin the fuel side. Have them check it while it's there.
Ok, I replaced the EGR valve and I'm still pukeing black smoke under normal acceleration... Help...

I picked my truck up and it's running great again. Question for you guys. Before I took it in I noticed a drop in mileage but I attributed it to my recent 4" lift. But now I'm noticing a significant boost in power as well as mileage. I changed the EGR as mentioned above. Could the new injectors and EGR result in increased pep and mileage?
