I am replacing front main wheel bearing hub assembly because the old one was giving a 'whomp whomp' sound and had a lot of play in and out. However with the new hub tightened up, turning the hub by hand gives a thud in the same position each turn. Also, the brake rotor dust shield was falling apart so I reinstalled the hub without it. The axle shaft is also loose in the axle tube and the axle dust seals are somewhat loose in the knuckle and axle tube.
Did you look @ the stub shaft before installing the new hub? If the old hub was severely trashed it may have worn grooves into the shaft which would make the new hub feel rough when turning
