Hey all - '01 F250 7.3L 4X4 - I was told by a local shop (they replaced front axle and pinion seals for me ) that I had a bad hub/bearing assy on driver side. So I tore it down in a attempt to fix myself. I found that after removing the hub/bearing assy that when I put pressure on the axle shaft the seal and rubber boot looking thingy move a good 1/4" to 1/2" in all directions inside the tube. I don't know specific part names, but as stated above, its the seal and boot thingy right where the shaft enters the tube on driver side. Is this bad? This is the "wheel seal" maybe? Could this problem have been mis-diagnosed as a bad hub/bearing assy? How do I tell if the hub/bearing assy is in fact bad? I'd love to return the $380 part for something that can't cost more than $50!!!!!
To diagnose a bad wheel/hub bearing assmbly is to jack the front of th truck up one side at a time. With a crow bar underneath the wheel, pull up on it and see if you have any up/down play or movement it the hub assmbly. This is the recommended way of checking. Checking side to side movement with the wheel jacked off the ground will generally not show a bad hub assembly. You have to check up/down movement. If you have to buy a new one, your stuck buying a whole new hub assembly.
Now, if youre hub assembly checks out good but..... your axle shaft is real sloppy inside of it. You may have to replace the needle bearings and maybe the outer axle shaft/yoke. Usually the needle bearings dry up and the end result is a scored outer axle shaft. If youre lucky and you cuaght it in time, it will be just the needles dryed up and if you did not do much four wheeling it will not have caused any shaft damage.
