Beach landing on the Outer Banks are all but impossible due to the sandbars and extreme currents. Sound side landings are possible, but with a storm like this, the existing navigational channels will most likely be washed shut. The marinas should fair ok, but getting a boat to them could be tricky until the dredges have a chance to clear them out.
With only one road on and one road off and that's via a bridge that is already in danger of failure, it's a real gamble either way.
How close can you get in a regular boat? Maybe bring along a little inflatable, flat bottom jon boat, or canoe? I'd say if it were my house out there, I'd find a way to get back quicker, but I've had some training in beach landings
I worked the relief on the outerbanks with their last big hurricane for a week. I was put up in a nice condo and made some good fema money. Hope it turns away but if it doesn't I will be back up that way.
Yeah, they have talked about it, but where they live, they are over 20 miles from the nearest main land and that is across the shallow, shifting sound. I think they will use that as an option, but without vehicles, not much they will be able to do. The biggest issue will be the the storm surge. Calling for up to 15ft and on an island that averages less than a 1/4 of mile wide and probably no more that 8ft average above sea level, well, you see. I have see the ocean waves run from one side of the island to the sound on more than one occasion and that was just from hard NE winds and high tides. The fears now are loosing the Bonner Bridge and new inlets/outlets breeching the highway. Last hurricane cut the lower end of the island for several weeks when a washover turned into an outlet and took out several hundred yards of road and a 10ft deep channel opened up..
I'll be there on the 24th of Sept if there is any way possible. As much damage a this storm may cause, our pales in comparison to the damage the Audubon Society and other radical groups have caused in the last few years. The have put more people out of work and out of there homes than this storm ever could. Possibly why sine are so determined to stay and fight for what they have left
I have been thinking of moving to Fl. but I don't know now, my place in Ok is paid for and the only bills I have is utility and Insurance, of course food, gas, and alll of that stuff. I think I'll star rite here for now.
good luck you guys.
i live straight across from ocracoke nc on the sound side at the mouth of the neuse river. dead center of projected path. on the water you diffenetly don't want to be in the water in any less than 50 ft boat and you don't want to be in the sound during this stuff . im expecting 5 foot of water in my yard and under my house i hope not seven or its in my house there saying 120 mi an hour winds gonna be interesting . yea chris i got a canoe tied up on my deck but its more peace of mind we park the trucks on high ground and remove everything else and pray.you cant float in these winds . and the water is salt so it destroys every thing. hope its not to bad!

Can someone tell my how a person plans to save their house if they stay for the storm? Nothing can be done to help save property. If they leave, they will be alive to come back. I've seen the distruction first hand and I don't think people understand what storm surge really is.
I am torn with feelings, I feel bad for the people that have to go threw this kind of stuff but at the same time it was their choice to live where they live knowing what can happen.
To me it is like like that guy that lived with the bears in alsaka (or where ever it was), sure it looked neat but in the end he got eaten by bears. What a surprise...
I'm in the middle of my 50 cent fix, engine is all apart. I'm in southeast PA and weather models show that I may get the west side of the storm... If it was running I would make room for it in my barn, but it looks like its outside for this one...
Homelite generator borrowed from work, 3500 watt inverter powered by 7.3 with a full tank...I should be watching dvds and drinking cold ones in NJ,....stay safe gang

You guys do the safe thing.
Agreed. After Ike, I have my 5th wheel on standby in hurricane season. The only sign you will see of me is taillights. I stayed because I was out of the surge zone, but winds and what was believed to be a small tornado took a good chunk out of my house. It was no fun with a 4 and 6 year old in the house.
