Okay on my third alt in 3 weeks. This time got a new 135 amp question is when @ idle rev it lights brighten for a split second. I heard its because of higher amps. New batteries load test fine, didnt do this before new alt. Its constant, @ idle rev it lights brighten !
You need to get something to monitor your voltage to see what it's really doing. This is a REALLY difficult subject to diagnose. Check out this thread for some good links and information: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...going-out.html

I have a volt meter and a scan gauge, volts seem fine. Around 12 @ start up and then stays around 13.5 -14. All seems good except when I stab it from idle lights slightly brighten then back to normal..
My latest alt I was told is a good one. Local shop that built the first 2 said he hooked me up. Its a china made wps piece of crap. I called wps and it is a 135 amp but it's their bottom line from china not in house. I can get that alt on ebay for 120.00, I paid 230 for my original built alt that lasted 5 days....anyways rambling, just ordered a dc 185 to end this madness.... Thanks for the input...
If the replacement alt. has a larger dia. pulley, that could cause your symptoms.
I compared the two Alternators yesterday and the new DC Power had a smaller pully on it compared to the stock reman
I was Happy to see that
to the op
a 135amp alt is barly enough to run the truck especialy when the glow plugs and stuff are on
and I also got the wire upgrade with mine too good people at DC power he threw it in for free
and they were out of 185amp alt the other day whn that happens they send the next size up which would be a 190amp you might ge lucky and get an even better one at a discounted price
If your lights get brighter when engine speed is raised, there is probably a poor connection between the alternator output and the batteries.
There is no way that an alternator, connected to 2 large batteries, could raise voltage high enough for you to see lights get brighter.
Try hooking a voltmeter across a battery and reving the engine. Then hook the same voltmeter to alternator output and rev the engine. The voltage readings should be the same. If not, there is a wire connection problem.
This happened to be with an '83 truck. Crummy connection to the battery was the cause. Easy fix, at least on a '83 with a straight 6 and no electronics.....
I have had 4 alternators on this truck in 3 weeks, this is the only one that does this. Getting a spike around 16 volts. Wps rep said bad internal voltage reg.. Dc rep said they are backed up, maybe I will get a upgrade also said it won't ship till end of next week...

The stocker just died from old age, the other 2 were local high amp large case rebuilds that worked but burned internally the one now is china junk. Believe me I have checked, cleaned, tightened everything. That Dc will fix all my woe's...

Rec my dc 185 alt about a week early, hoping for the upgrade but I'm stoked with the quality of this alt.. All problems I was having with 3 previous alt's are cured.. If you need a alt don't mess around like I did just order the dc...

One other thing you should consider. The alternator (ALT) output wire is designed for the OEM 110 amp current load. When I upgraded mine to 160 amps I added a second piece of #4 wire to the ALT output and ran it to the passenger side battery.
If you lights continue to get brighter when you rev the engine wit this latest ALT, I would check the glow plug relay circuit. It is the only circuit on the 6.0 that can pull that kind of current other than a short circuit which would blow a fuse. I would check you fuse panel for a blown fuse.
When I got my upgraded ALT it had a smaller then OEM pulley. I installed as is but noticed the belt tension was not as tight. I replaced to upgraded ALT pulley with the OEM pulley to insure the belt and other accessories would not be damaged.
Also, if you start you truck in the dark and turn the headlights on you will notice that after about 15 to 20 seconds the lights will get brighter. That is normal and is caused by the glow plug relay timing out and no longer drawing almost 100 amps.
