v-10

I have 2002 f250 super duty with v-10 . Truck has about 8" of lift with 36x15.50x16 tires and 4.88 gear. I do alot of towing have 25' center console boat weight is between 6000-7000lbs. Towing the boat not using overdrive 58-60mph motor is taching 2800-3000rpms. Trying lower rpms while towing. What do you guys think? I know a lifted truck is not the perfect tow vehicle but i purchaced the truck this way . Also does anyone have any intel about 5 Star Tuning for v-10 thinking purchasing a tuner for this truck also can anyone tell me their phone number site is not working for me.

My stock 2000 F250, 3.73, V10, Auto, does 65-70mph right around 2K RPM.

Would be interesting to see if the bigger tires offset the 4.88 Gear ratio. In 4th gear no trailer what does 2K rpm get you for MPH?

Do you have to use 3rd gear to tow? (The overdrive button as far as I can tell just disables 4th gear.) My truck with overdrive off, will do 3-3.5K RPM for 60-65mph.

Your 2002 Super Duty has the following drive ratios (see link below - Page 67):

1st Gear - 2.71
2nd Gear - 1.54
3rd Gear - 1.00
4th Gear - 0.71

https://www.fleet.ford.com/truckbbas/non-html/2002/fsersdcd.pdf

Using the RPM Calculator (see link below), your Super Duty should have the following RPM's at 60 MPH in 3rd gear and in 4th gear:

RPM Calculator

Your Super Duty with 4.88 axle gears:

Miles Per Hour: 60 (3rd Gear)
Tire Diameter in Inches: 36
Axle Ratio: 4.88
Transmission High Gear Ratio: 1.00
RPM's: 2735

Miles Per Hour: 60 (4rd Gear)
Tire Diameter in Inches: 36
Axle Ratio: 4.88
Transmission High Gear Ratio: 0.71
RPM's: 1942

Check you actaul RPM's but it appears that you may have 5.13 or 5.38 gears.

Your Super Duty with 5.13 axle gears:

Miles Per Hour: 60 (3rd Gear)
Tire Diameter in Inches: 36
Axle Ratio: 5.13
Transmission High Gear Ratio: 1.00
RPM's: 2875

Miles Per Hour: 60 (4rd Gear)
Tire Diameter in Inches: 36
Axle Ratio: 5.13
Transmission High Gear Ratio: 0.71
RPM's: 2041

Your Super Duty with 5.38 axle gears:

Miles Per Hour: 60 (3rd Gear)
Tire Diameter in Inches: 36
Axle Ratio: 5.38
Transmission High Gear Ratio: 1.00
RPM's: 3015

Miles Per Hour: 60 (4rd Gear)
Tire Diameter in Inches: 36
Axle Ratio: 5.38
Transmission High Gear Ratio: 0.71
RPM's: 2141

That is optimal RPM for making power with the V10, so I am wondering why you want to lower the RPM. If you want to improve MPG while towing, lowering RPM probably won't do it. If anything, going to a skinnier tire might help because that wide tire size you are running is definitely hurting your MPG.

As for the 5 Star tuner, I am planning on getting one ASAP and lots of folks on FTE have them.

I have not measured the roll out diameter of the tire so this may make a differance in the numbers as you well know just because it 36" really does not mean they are 36".

Is a 5 star tuner worth the investment on a 2000/2002 truck with no other mods? Do I need headers/modified intake, bigger exhaust, etc. to take advantage of it?

Yes, it is worth it to me. Mike at 5-Star tuning can make a tune for whatever you have, even no mods at all (like mine). I had my wife convinced to get the tuner and about 3 hours later I backed into a tree. Now my tuner money is going to fix my truck bed.
