FAQ - door chime/buzzer question
Ok i asked this in the 86-96 section and best thing i came up with was that the 86-96 trucks all have a door bell chime not a buzzer, do the 80-86 trucks have chimes (bell) or do they actually have a buzzer? if they have a buzzer what does it look like (unit and plug) and would I be able to put it into a 95 truck? also where would it be located on a 80-86 truck so i can look for it and pull it quickly? also another question I hope to get answered is what year did ford start using the bell chime vs the buzzer
All Fords, Custom, and XL models all had buzzers (1983-96)
XLT, and XLT Lariat (1980?-86) had buzzers
All Fords, XLT Lariat, all had chimes (87-96).
All 3 of my Fords in my sig. all have working buzzers.
Both trucks are Custom, and the camper is an XL.

ok well i have gone to the PAP and pulled a few door chimes out of the trucks and im sure they were XL models but all i have gotten was the lousey door chime type
do you have a buzzer number for it, vs the bell type?

Here is a buzzer, it's above the glove compartment behind the panel.

Note there were different types....
1980-82 (I believe, might be 81) used two separate buzzers - one for the seat belt (above the glove compartment) and another for the Headlights-On (if equipped, was optional) and was behind the center console housing the radio & HVAC controls (forget which side).
Later years (1983+?) incorporated the two into one, above the glove compartment. Headlights-On still optional, just a different buzzer unit was installed.
Somewhere in the later years (1984?) came the key-in-ignition functionality, I believe that uses the same buzzer element as the seat-belt buzzer.

ok I pulled one out of a 86 truck in same location that was a bell chime 95 i know is under the steering colum
Now I'm gonna have to check my truck for a buzzer! Mines an '83 f150xl and it never buzzes.
When I cleaned off the floor pans I saw where my truck had a wire running up into the driver's seat belt clip. It was plugged in.
I bet the PO pulled mine because he got tired of hearing it.

Exactly why I re-connected my buzzer!
When you turn the key on, and the seat belt warning light comes on to the tune of a classic buzzer, it just screams out "old truck"
I HATE chimes! Annoying as hell!

1975-1983: Seat Belt Warning Buzzer: Green or black in appearance
1980-1983: Headlamp on warning buzzer: White in appearance.
1984-up: Key in ignition, Headlamp, and seat belt were one unit, however they had two buzzers.
These are swappable 1984-1996. However some had buzzers and some had chimes. Not sure when they switched to chimes. The service part 1984-1996 etc are chimes.

well i looked every where in short of ripping my truck appart and still not able to locate a buzzer unit.....I personally love the buzzer because every one I know (family included) hates them cus they are "annoying" and I want it to annoy them so if they leave shizzle on they will remember to turn the thing off...im about ready to call in the Calvary on this too...I just want to find this thing so bad and get it installed...I just hope I can figure out how to get the key in/lights on buzzer type!! I really want that so if lights are left on (even tho im converting to 100% LED and energy drain will be minimal/negligible) I still want the buzzer for when keys are left in/battery on type things...

There was a certain combination you can do on the 80-82 trucks that will make both buzzers go off at the same time. Sounds like something from a horror movie.
I took an entire wiring harness out of a 1982 donor and I seem to remember the headlight-on buzzer - at least the connector for it - having been stuck to the center column.
Maybe I'm just losing it....................
