the other day I lost all power to the truck while driving on the freeway. I replaced the Alt. still wouldn't crank. I pulled the starter and tested it turned out to be bad. I replaced it. it still wont crank over .batt. is new has this ever happened to any one else. Could there be some sort of Vapor/liquid lock that would have occurred when the power went out.
A little more info - engine size, year, fuel, etc. Did the engine make death-sounds when it stopped, or did it just quit running? If you blew a head gasket, the engine could be hydro locked, and continued attempts to crank it could break things.
Also, consider testing if the engine is seized by putting a breaker bar on the crank nut and trying to turn the engine over by hand. Pull the spark plugs if it's a gas engine.
thanks to the response. it is a 2006, 5.4 with 51000 mi. no death sounds just quit running check engine light came on when it lost all electrical power. engine was not running hot.. theres no water, metal shavings in oil
If it lost electrical power, then most likely it is a problem in the power distribution. A bad battery cable or ends, corrosion, or a blown main fuse or fusible link. Any kind of dead short could have also taken out the battery. You need to remove it from the truck, charge it completely and load test it.
I have ran an engine (03' 4.0l) with a bad alternator already off afresh charged battery. The alternator not charging made the battery go dead thus killing and not allowing it to start. By putting in a fresh battery I could get it home to change out the alternator.
Sounds like a bad/shorted battery or a corroded connection. First thing to check is your battery terminals. Loosen them, clean them off, and reconnect. Then if your battery voltage is low, try starting again while jumping it or on a battery booster.
