no tailgate step I have no idea if that would make it weaker or stronger. So far it seems a sheet of plywood is the answer. They use to place bales of hay around racetracks to absorb impact.

Might be harder to slide then plywood but what about a rubber stall mat? Not sure if it will absorb as much impact but at least it won't weather.

I'd attach a 3/16 piece of diamond plate to the whole tailgate, minus the area needed to close the tailgate. Strengthen the whole thing and wouldn't look too bad.

So what I'm hearin' here is that this fall when I'm tailgating I should not throw my 200lb friends on to my tailgate...which is sort of common sense because it would make their beers foam up.
