1993 how to wire electric brake controller
1993 how to wire electric brake controller
I have a 1993 f150 and it has the factory towing package. It has a unique brake controller connector under the dash --and even though i have yet to find the pig tail in stock at a local parts store-- i see it is available and for the 1992-93 years only (has just 4 pins) .
what I need to know is where i need to ad the fuses/circuit breakers and what size they should be. --apparently this is in the owners manual that i don't have. and also i would assume the brake wires are already run to the back--though i am not sure where. At the rear frame rail the truck already has a t connector with a flat 4 wiring on it and in the same location there is a round plug that is un-used that has two wires terminating in a female connector -- -i guess this is the factory brake controller wires though not sure. hopefully somebody has the info to get the factory towing package working and can help me out thanks in advance.

You do not need to add any fuses or circuit breakers.
Just buy the pig tail plug from any trailer place and splice the pig tail wires to the break controller wires. The colors may not match from the controller to the pig tail.

subford thanks---the pig tail you pictured is not the one for my truck, mine has only 4 pins not 6 like the one pictured i don't know if that changes anything in your diagram or not. I bought that one from the parts store and it is too big for my socket. from the research i have done 92 and 93 are unique. I have also found that those years needed fuses added were 94 up already have them from the factory. was your diagram for the 93 year? also what about that rear plug? if somebody could post the diagram of the trailer wiring at the rear that would be great---thanks
IF the brake controller you have has a warranty on it I would reccommend having a trailer store install it for you with a big 7 plug. I only say this because I used to work for a trailer store. Most the brake controllers we sold had a lifetime warranty unless you installed it wrong and fried it, then it was a paper weight with no warranty. The trailer store will have all the right tools and experience to do the job and it will most likely only take them an hour at most. Probably only cost you $60-80. If you got a decent brake controller I am sure you paid much more than that.
subford that is exactly what i was looking for thank you. does it say in your info what location that 30amp engine compartment fues is? they are not marked in the fues box just numbered and i don't have the owners manual thanks again
turnkyle thanks for your input --yes the controller i bout was 80, i had a 2000 sd i set up for brakes about 8 years ago and that was a piece of cake just plugged in the controller under the dash and put a ford combo 7way/4way plug at the back plugged right in to the factory connector took all of 15 minutes (including mounting the controller) so I am hoping this will be just as easy --- though the stuff out there is not as user friendly as it was for the 2000

subford that was excellent i am printing that pic now and going to tape it in my glove box. my truck was missing the T location 30 amp fuse that must be why i was not getting any juice at the connector under the dash---also i don't have the Trailer marker lamps relay, is there a size or type for that i need to know? is that something i get from ford or a parts store thanks again
It should be the same relay as the power relay, horn relay and the fuel pump relay.
Some call it a new stile ISO Bosh relay and yes you can get it from an auto parts store or the Ford dealer.

4 pin trailer brake connector
You can use the 6 pin male pigtail on the 4 pin female truck connector by cutting off part of the connector. Cut off the two pin openings on the side away from the flanged side of the connector. You are basically hacking off 1/3 of the connector. Make the cut just outboard of the partiton for the middle two pins. In the pigtail pictured above in this post, you would be cutting off the bottom 1/3 of the connector. You should remove the wires from the connector by pulling out the red center spacer, there is a tab on one side you can see from the side of the connector - push it in with a punch and the red spacer will come out the end. You will need to cut the spacer too. After modifying the connector put the 4 wires back in to match the 4 on the truck side connector and put the spacer back in - it is what locks the wires in the connector.
You can also apparently get a 4 pin connector here:

I love to bring up old threads.... My 93 f350 with the towing package has a wierd bumper. I have the brake controller plugged in. I am not sure where the output wire is at the back of the truck. I see that It has that funky "T" connector with the 4 wire trailer connector. I need to use a 7 wire with the brake controller. where is the brake controller output plug/wire? Or do I need to run a wire?
Thanks
Thanks
If it does not have the towing package and would not think it does if someone put the "T" on it then the Dark Blue wire should stop at the firewall. Yes you will have to run a wire from the firewall to the rear end if one is not all ready been run.
If you have the towing package you would have two relays in a small relay box mounted beside the main fuse relay box under the hood.
