7.3 Programmer

I'm new to big trucks and recently bought an '01 7.3 f250. Not knowing much about trucks, I had my father look over it for the obvious.

What was not obvious is that recently my Edge power programmer died.(blanked out, and I can't tell if its a power source problem or not).

Was wondering if anyone could offer me advice on getting a new programmer? I've heard Diablo is good, but a couple of my friends swear by Bully Dog.

Welcome to FTE. I have a DP Tuner on my 7.3 and could not be happier. The tunes are custom for my setup and not out of the box canned tunes
Diesel tuning products for Ford PowerStroke

I would recommend guages though at a bare minimum a pyro guage to monitor your EGT's

gages

I've got the standard three gages. (boost, pyro, and tranny- although the boost gage doesn't really work... I relied on the programmer for that)

You're going to have to forgive me, I don't know all the acronyms, what is a DP tuner?

They are a tuning company that specializes in 7.3L Tuning, Click on the link that I posted. Hopefully they will see this and chime in,

I am glad that you have gauges already. Where did you tap your boost line into?

Honestly i have no idea. I work in an aircraft mech shop, and its been passed down through our shop twice now. I'll get back to you once i know for sure. But i think the gages came from factory with it. However, its not a stock turbo so that may play in to it.

No it wouldn't be a stock gauge for sure as I don't think any 7.3 came with a boost gauge and not even all the 6.0s(engine after the 7.3) had them.

Would highly suggest custom tunes. Sets you back a little more, but if the modding bug catches you big time, you'll already be setup to handle other things down the line.

DP tune or TS performance based chipsets are the way to go on the 7.3 they are the most reliable way to make safe HP and it's a lot more than any others can even touch! Also allows you to change between tunes on the fly just by turning a dial! As for your edge check the cir. Lighter fuse as it also powers the OBDII PORT the programer plugs into. Jim & fat Monty

My personal experience with DP-Tuner

1. I towed a heavy load the wrong way and blew up the transmission in my 2000 F250 diesel tow vehicle.

2. I put in a bigger transmission (and cooler and transmission temp gauge).

3. I discovered other issues with the exhaust system (turbo feed) and had it fixed.

4. I bought a performance chip to extend the life of the transmission, as well as make better use of my fuel.

That 4th step brings me to the reason for this post. After careful research and reading many reviews on many chips, I contacted the guys at dp-tuner.com. Why?

1. Tunes can be changed "on-the-fly' for changing conditions and it's programmable, I can get updates and upgrades emailed to me.

2. They are designed in the USA, made in the USA, programmed in the USA, and supported in the USA. I'm not against any other country, but I like to see my money contribute to the welfare of my countrymen when I get the opportunity.

3. Their website has all (and I mean all) the information up front. Installation instructions with correct grammar (as opposed to translated instructions), software instructions, pros and cons of all options available, and the gauges and other products to accompany/support a performance chip.

4. They called me: I submitted questions to the website because while the product is not expensive, my truck ("Stinky") is. This is going to change my truck's "personality" and I wanted to make sure these guys knew how not to make Stinky suicidal.

They had James Breeden call me and he really knows diesels and their product. Skeptics will say I don't know enough to know if he knows his stuff. I usually get no less than 3 sources of information before I make investments (and this is one) and he knew everything I had amassed before the call (and more). When I first got the chip, most of the programs worked beautifully... just as advertised. I had a problem with the shifts in the Economy tune and the Tow tune. This was not their fault... remember that custom transmission I mentioned above? Guess what... do you also remember I said it was programmable from emailed files? James worked with me on my issues with the tunes. I explained precisely what I was experiencing with the shifts and under what conditions. He walked me through what's good for the transmission vs. the engine vs. passenger comfort. James and I formulated an answer, and I included a request to drop one shift point (lower the speed at which point the transmission will shift up) in the economy tune. Jody Tipton changed the troublesome programs (it's really nice to know who I'm working with), and the modification was emailed to me. The cost? It's all part of the original purchase price. How 'bout that?

I used my laptop to transfer the customized tune to Stinky's chip and I was listening to that throaty rumble 5 minutes later. I commute 100 miles (round trip) every day and this was my opportunity to stretch Stinky's legs a bit. The tune did precisely what I wanted it to do and what they said it would do. I still have to drive Stinky enough to get the MPG figures, but I can say that after all the repairs/upgrades to the truck and using the economy tune... that is one slow-moving fuel gauge.

That list of reasons I went with dp-tune.com? Throw outrageously good customer support on there for good measure.
