I changed my diff oil back in April and I've been noticing the fill plug and diff cover are leaking. I have refilled it since then but, how do I fix this? I didn't notice the diff cover till this past weekend when I was doing my shocks.
I re sealed the fill plug three times with silicone gasket maker, and twice with the black high temp stuff as well. I should be able to just clean the diff cover mating surfaces and get a real gasket, correct? But that doesn't solve my issue with fill plug. What do I do with that?
put teflon pipe tape on the threads for the fil plug...as far as cover. make sure its not rusted you have a good clean surface and i used gray rtv on mine, no problems
It's a rubber hose that comes out of the brake line junction box on the rear axle. One rubber hose is the rear brake line and the other is the breather. Although if the breather is plugged, the fluid comes out of the axle seals, not the rear cover.
X2 on the teflon tape. Clean the surfaces well and use RTV on the cover. No gasket needed. The stores will sell you one but you don't need it.

I thought the breather was on the axle tube and vented the whole differential. If it was plugged it would create pressure inside the differential that has to vent somewhere which would then create leaks at the seals and/or the cover... I could be mistaken but that is what I have seen before.

The whole thing, from axle seal to axle seal, is one sealed unit. The only opening is the breather. I guess I should have said, the seals always leak before the cover or fill plug. The pressure is going to attack the weakest point and that's not the cover or fill plug.
