What would you do??

I am having a hard time parting with the $$$ regarding the following:

$1200 Titan 50 gal fuel tank
$450 Edge Insight CTS

As most of you probably know, I average a little over 1000 miles/week towing work trailers to job sites across the SE USA. I go as far as Kansas, Louisiana, back East to Georgia and Florida, so there have been times where I work in Kansas City on Monday, Panama City on Wed. My '11 F250 has 63,000 on it right now, driving a little over 1200 miles this week, leaving in a few minutes. (you get the idea)

I feel like the two things above would be smart to have but (as Beaver Cleaver would say) GOLLY, that's a lot of money.

just drive the truck. you put too many miles on it so fast that you will be trading it before you get any real return on your investment.

I would thing that especially in your case, the tank would be a great upgrade. You would spend half the time at the pump and be able to pick your fill-ups better. The return on that investment in time savings and price per gallon savings would be well worth it to me.

What Super Duty frame/body configurations does the Titan tank fit?

If your future replacement truck will be a Diesel Super Duty of the same cab/bed configuration, then buy the aftermarket tank and keep the factory tank in storage. Swap them when you sell/trade the current truck!

You could also sell the aftermarket tank and recoup some of your investment.

I wrestled with the ~$1,500 cost of buying and installing the 67 gallon Titan tank in my 04 for almost a year but finally bit the bullet just before last Christmas. I have to say that I am really pleased with having the additional fuel on board.

I do not usually drive a long distance in a given day but my one way commutes to various job sites seem to all be 50 - 60 miles daily so I typically put on at least 1,000kms (I'm in Canada) per week. After the EGR delete and SCT tuner were installed on my truck, I could get about 1,000kms out of the stock tank. However, I tow a 7 ton dumping trailer that is 4,800 pounds empty 30% - 40% of the time. One trip with the trailer in a week and I had to fuel up somewhere mid week which given I have a company gas card can be a pain as I have to go to a certain vendor that also has to have diesel pump. With the new Titan tank just doing highway miles (not towing) I can easily go 1,600kms and I roll with the cruise at 120kms (75 mph). I no longer have to deal with fueling up mid-week which I really like.

I have one little problem though with the Titan tank which I have not been able to eliminate and that is spitting out when it is almost full. I have spoken to Titan and checked all of the vent hoses and everything is installed correctly but if I am on a fast diesel pump there is a fair amount of fuel that is spit out when the tank is almost full. I have developed the habit of locking the fill nozzle at a slower speed when I am a few gallons short of being full and this greatly reduces and/or eliminates the amount of fuel spit out.

In my case my fuel stops have been cut almost in half so if I factor my time to divert to a fuel stop for me it was a worthwhile investment.

The Edge CTS is the same product for all years. In fact it is universal for Ford, Chevy, Dodge, As it as you what make of vehicle you have the 1st time it powers up. It mounts with a suction cup and can be removed in 30 seconds and reinstalled in 2 minute ( depending on how adapt you are to fishing the wires up the door edge.)

If you want the information that the CTS offers. I would get it, You can always transfer it to any new truck that you buy. Unless the manufactures change the port where it connects, It should be upward compatible.

The fuel tank in the trucks is usually larger than most folks bladders, So you are probably going to stop regardless. The advantage of the Titan is that you can choose where to spend your money. The fuel station close to my home ( as Epic has probably noticed) are expensive. But 10 miles away in Roy, I can buy diesel for almost 40 cents a gallon cheaper. There is always a price war going on over there. It would be great to fill up at the cheap stations and have enough fuel to wait until I passed that way again rather than making a special trip for fuel.

You will have to look at how much fuel prices vary along the routes you drive. If having the extended driving range would alow you to save money by choosing cheaper fuel stop.s It might pay for itself over time.

I have the 50 gallon Titan. It was a good decision. I hated having to look for fuel every 225 miles and being at the mercy of local pricing. I would recommend the Titan Tank.

I had the Edge Insight for my 6.0. I sold it to a buddy when I bought the 6.7. I do not feel a need for one today but I may get another down the road just for fun.

Have you looked into transfer tanks? They make low profile ones that will work with your 5th wheel setup. When you trade trucks in a couple of years just switch it into the new truck.

If I thought I needed the Edge I wouldn't hesitate to buy it, as it is transferable to the new truck also.

If you have room, consider a transfer tank, then you can easily move it from truck to truck. If you have an Android phone you can get the Torque app for less than $5 and pick up a OBDII to Bluetooth adapter form Amazon for less than $40.
It works for me.

Evidently your getting by with what you have so why spend the money? but with that said I'd go with a Titan from what you've posted about your trips. You can drop it and sell it if you trade in etc. and get lot's of bucks back plus the facts of savings between time and price differences like Epic said.
Almost an long term investment. Your should get 300k or more before you sell or trade right?

I would do the Titan tank. With the driving you do, the tank could help pay for itself over the life of your truck since you can shop for cheaper fuel prices ( buy fuel in States where taxes are less...etc).

The CTS is cool, but this truck allows you to monitor a lot of stuff already and if you are keeping it stock, I'm not so sure why you care what some of the other parameters say since the safeties in the truck software are probably sufficient.

The CTS won't probably save you a dime, but the Titan could pay for itself if you watch fuel prices.

The thought about spending a grand on a damn fuel tank kills me when the OEM should have been at least a 40 gallon (Ford are you listening!?). Now that I have lifted my truck etc, my mileage has DROPPED. I think i am going to have to bite the bullet and order one. Maybe I will only have to stop every 100 miles then LOL.

I'm tight with my money too, I hate spending it unless it's a real need. I would think you could find a universal tank in the bed that is used even. You don't spend hardly any time installing or swapping it into a new truck in 3 or 4 more years. Unless you need the bed space.

What exactly do you plan on gaining with these items? I agree that it's nice to be able to see what's going on with your truck, but while under warranty you are protected so there is no possible financial benefit short of possibly reduced downtime due to catching something sooner.

And the same with the tank, do you think you could save money with the larger capacity? I know that when I travel I don't like to stop multiple times within a short amount of time, so if I stop to use the bathroom I find fuel and don't worry about the small price difference. I have a tough time believing that you'll save even a fraction of the cost of that Titan tank even if you meticulously plan your fueling. You'll not spend the time fueling up every 200 miles, but at what cost?

But then again, I like stock trucks!
