What would you do??
$1200 Titan 50 gal fuel tank
$450 Edge Insight CTS
As most of you probably know, I average a little over 1000 miles/week towing work trailers to job sites across the SE USA. I go as far as Kansas, Louisiana, back East to Georgia and Florida, so there have been times where I work in Kansas City on Monday, Panama City on Wed. My '11 F250 has 63,000 on it right now, driving a little over 1200 miles this week, leaving in a few minutes. (you get the idea)
I feel like the two things above would be smart to have but (as Beaver Cleaver would say) GOLLY, that's a lot of money.
If your future replacement truck will be a Diesel Super Duty of the same cab/bed configuration, then buy the aftermarket tank and keep the factory tank in storage. Swap them when you sell/trade the current truck!
You could also sell the aftermarket tank and recoup some of your investment.
I do not usually drive a long distance in a given day but my one way commutes to various job sites seem to all be 50 - 60 miles daily so I typically put on at least 1,000kms (I'm in Canada) per week. After the EGR delete and SCT tuner were installed on my truck, I could get about 1,000kms out of the stock tank. However, I tow a 7 ton dumping trailer that is 4,800 pounds empty 30% - 40% of the time. One trip with the trailer in a week and I had to fuel up somewhere mid week which given I have a company gas card can be a pain as I have to go to a certain vendor that also has to have diesel pump. With the new Titan tank just doing highway miles (not towing) I can easily go 1,600kms and I roll with the cruise at 120kms (75 mph). I no longer have to deal with fueling up mid-week which I really like.
I have one little problem though with the Titan tank which I have not been able to eliminate and that is spitting out when it is almost full. I have spoken to Titan and checked all of the vent hoses and everything is installed correctly but if I am on a fast diesel pump there is a fair amount of fuel that is spit out when the tank is almost full. I have developed the habit of locking the fill nozzle at a slower speed when I am a few gallons short of being full and this greatly reduces and/or eliminates the amount of fuel spit out.
In my case my fuel stops have been cut almost in half so if I factor my time to divert to a fuel stop for me it was a worthwhile investment.
If you want the information that the CTS offers. I would get it, You can always transfer it to any new truck that you buy. Unless the manufactures change the port where it connects, It should be upward compatible.
The fuel tank in the trucks is usually larger than most folks bladders, So you are probably going to stop regardless. The advantage of the Titan is that you can choose where to spend your money. The fuel station close to my home ( as Epic has probably noticed) are expensive. But 10 miles away in Roy, I can buy diesel for almost 40 cents a gallon cheaper. There is always a price war going on over there. It would be great to fill up at the cheap stations and have enough fuel to wait until I passed that way again rather than making a special trip for fuel.
You will have to look at how much fuel prices vary along the routes you drive. If having the extended driving range would alow you to save money by choosing cheaper fuel stop.s It might pay for itself over time.

I had the Edge Insight for my 6.0. I sold it to a buddy when I bought the 6.7. I do not feel a need for one today but I may get another down the road just for fun.

If I thought I needed the Edge I wouldn't hesitate to buy it, as it is transferable to the new truck also.
It works for me.

Almost an long term investment. Your should get 300k or more before you sell or trade right?
The CTS is cool, but this truck allows you to monitor a lot of stuff already and if you are keeping it stock, I'm not so sure why you care what some of the other parameters say since the safeties in the truck software are probably sufficient.
The CTS won't probably save you a dime, but the Titan could pay for itself if you watch fuel prices.
And the same with the tank, do you think you could save money with the larger capacity? I know that when I travel I don't like to stop multiple times within a short amount of time, so if I stop to use the bathroom I find fuel and don't worry about the small price difference. I have a tough time believing that you'll save even a fraction of the cost of that Titan tank even if you meticulously plan your fueling. You'll not spend the time fueling up every 200 miles, but at what cost?
But then again, I like stock trucks!
