Ideally you would use something called a fresh air respirator. Air is pumped in fresh so you arent trying to filter out the dust. Silicosis can come from using sand. Sand is unhealthy to use and actually breaks down pretty quickly. I use a product called starblast, from dupont. it is $5 per 50lb and is great for stripping body panels. It has a very low level of silca as well.
Just about any respirator approved for mine use (as the above mentioned MSA), exists strictly due to silicosis. One of my great granddads was an underground driller in the days before respirators, and died from silicosis. Every year in MSHA refreshers, we are required by law to spend "X" amount of time discussing it, and the proper protection.
As far as sand goes, I use masonary sand. Its been screened at least once and sells for $8.50 a ton. If you go this route, just make sure they give you the dry sand on top. Not the wet stuff underneath or this will add extra work. get a window sreen sift once yourself and store in a sealable container. Sure beats $2-3 for only 80lbs and you dont have to worry about recycling it. Just blast away>
What about glass bead or crushed glass media? Glass is made from silica right so is the dust as hazardous?
From everything I've heard glass bead is considered safe to blast with, but you should always use some kind of dust collection system with your blast cabinent.
