I just got my truck not that long ago and it's always had 4.30LS from the factory. I know a lot of people switch out to this or 4.5 something. Especially if you add bigger tires or do any towing. Lots of guys here who have done it and know will chime in.
They keep the RPM in the optimal range for power, which means it may be better for MPG because you don't have to use as much throttle to maintain speed (momentum). That is even more applicable when towing.
With 4.56 Limited Slip, 285/75/16s Bridgestone Revos, y-pipe mod, and a 5 star 91 octane towning tune it'll bark the tires pretty good from a standing straightline romp on the gas in 90 degree weather on asphalt with a half box full of fire wood. I would imagine it would eat up a set of stock tires in cooler weather with the tune modified a little and no wood in the box! I'm positive if it was a one wheel wonder it would roll smoke all day long.
I can roast the Hell out of my tires just punching the throttle. Probably has to do with the tires though, 285/75/16 Federal Couragia M/T. Super soft mud tires...
With my excursion, I couldn't spin the tires at all, even trying to do a brake stand it wouldn't work. Just too much weight over the rear. After the 5 star 91 perf tune, I was able to make it peel out around corners, but nothing to write home about. That had 3.73s. The new truck, reg cab 4x4 runs great I think; from the rpm I believe it has 3.73s as well but not 100% convinced. Main reason for that is, it'll spin all thru 1st if I mash it from a stop, depending on asphalt. Sometimes it'll start gripping at around 20-25mph on the speedo, sometimes it'll get to 35ish and when the shift comes up it gets traction. I can't wait to see this thing on a 5 star perf tune...

I've got the one wheel wonder. 2005 F250 stock 3V V10 4.10 RE 18" rims new Wild Cat's and it'll do as assumed anytime, anywhere. I'd much rather it didn't.
My stock V10 with BF Goodrich A/T 285/75 R16 will smoke both tires from a dead stop. I found this out last night when the PSD pulled next to me! Not sure what my stock gears are though.

It's actually my brothers PSD. He has a 03 7.3. From about 0 to 40 mph I pull ahead but once his turbo kicks in it's over for me. Once I get the cash together I will have to get a 5 Star tune and try again.
