Question Am I missing a part??

Hello everyone. I drive a 2006 Lincoln Mark LT which I believe is the same as an F-150. My wife recently backed into another car which resulted in my rear bumper being replaced. After getting the truck back from the shop, I noticed the tailgate did not have the usual tension on it. I am not sure if it had some type of assist on it, but it used to have tension on it that would keep it from banging down. It looks like there is a rod that comes out the bottom of the tailgate, goes through a rectangular hole in the bumper, but is not connected to anything. Can anyone tell me what part I am missing? The shop doesn't open until Monday and I wanted to make sure I knew what was wrong before I went in. Thank you for any help.

View between opened tailgate and bumper. There is a rod that goes through the bumper:

This is the same rod from under the bumper. It is not connected to anything.

It is on the passanger side of the tailgate correct? If so that is there as a safety catch to keep the tailgate from dropping all the way down and hitting the bumper and denting it up should the cables ever break. The spare tire crank is right next to the licence plate to the right.

He's right... Some trucks have it, some don't...

That explains it! I was worried the shop forgot to hook something back up. Thanks for the info guys!

There is a torsion bar in the tailgate.
The end of it is the socket that the left side of the tailgate pivots on.
Part number is 99402A68/ 83402A68.
The bar may be broken and not supporting the gates weight.
Remove the tailgate from the truck.
Take hold of the socket hinge on the left side and see if you can turn it.
There should be a great deal of resistance.
In fact you should not be able to turn it.
If it rotates you will need a new torsion rod.
Replacing it requires drilling into the other side of the gate in order to remove the broken remnant from the clamp inside the right side of the tailgate.
