Fuel tank switch
I went to switch from front to rear tank and could not draw fuel from rear tank and it is full of fuel. I put my test light on the plug at 3 way valve on frame and there is only power on one wire when switch is on front tank. No power on either wire when switched to rear tank. My truck is carbed so no electric fuel pump anywhere. 1985 F150 6cyl 4sp
Should there be power on both wires or is one for front tank and one wire for rear tank?

According to my Haynes manual, the 3-port valve is spring loaded to return to the rear tank when no voltage is sent.
It could be that the solenoid is stuck or the return spring is bad.
Sorry if this is not too useful, I only have a little experience with this sort of fuel system.

That's ENTIRELY useful!
Have to spread the love some more, though.
I was thinking of saying the same thing but was too lazy to go look it up in the wiring diagrams to verify it....

Some 1985/86 trucks used a 3 ported fuel tank selector valve assy (E5TZ-9189-A), that was a
POS from day one!
The 6 ported selector valve (E5TZ-9189-B) used on some 1985/86's is also a
POS !

Bill,
I have a 1981 with a 3-port variant; is it also a POS?
I got a 1985 3-port from a JY, I planned on using it as a replacement when mine dies as brand-new replacements are purt expensive.
Is it not the same thing as my 1981 variant?
Would you suggest an aftermarket variant to replace the POS?

I will give the valve a couple swats with my knockometer,,if that is not the solution I will likely plumb in a manual 3 way valve. thanks for your insite

The 3 & 6 ported selector valves used 198
5 /86 were just awful, had nothing but trouble with them. Today, it's the same old sad story: crap.
Dunno anything about aftermarket valves.

Hello,,village idiot back again,,,,I installed a manual fuel selector and then tried to run truck on rear tank,,still no fuel! So I grabbed fuel line at rear tank and gave it a tug,,there was an obvious kink in line stopping fuel flow.. A couple days earlier I had replaced the sending unit gasket. On the other hand I am ahead of the game as I will never have to deal with my electric fuel selector failing.

Bill, my Dad has a 1988 F150 with dual tanks. I don't think he has any trouble with it
yet, but is the valve used on 1988s any better than the earlier ones?
