351w camshaft

i have a 85 f350 with a near stock 351w H.O. i am in the process of rebuilding it and have bored it .030 over and am putting heddman longtube headers out to dual exhaust, its got mechanical fuel pump and a 600 cfm holley 4 bbl, stock heads and valve train. what i am wondering is which aftermarket camshaft and intake manifold set up will give me a lot of extra grunt out of this engine? what i am looking for is when i step on the gas, it really puts you back in the seat or to make some of these chevy lovers look stupid when i tow them around the parking lot. any suggestions?

A really good camshaft ain't gonna do you much good when you have crap heads on that block. Find yourself a nice set of GT40's, then build around those.

Better yet, get aftermarket heads. Ford has crappy cylinder heads.

I third on the cylinder heads. Ford small block heads suck. Get a good aftermarket
cast iron cylinder head from World, RHS or Dart. All can be bought from Summit or
Jegs. Will work wonders on a 351W with a good cam and exhaust.

Ordering the cast iron heads like someone mentioned, would be the way to go. You could not even get your stock Ford heads converted for the price they want for the aftermarket cast iron heads.

Besides larger better flowing ports, they have larger valves, and more importantly, they are setup for a adjustable valve train with screw-in studs and pushrod guide plates. So you can actually adjust your valve lash like a chevy for the different cam you will run. You will need to get hardened pushrods since you will be running guide plates.

After this, you will be looking at chevies in the rearview mirror.

Power = $$$

You can at least consider the GT40 heads. Not as good as aftermarket, but better than what you have.

Where aftermarket heads are usually a better bargain, is that they are ready to bolt on.
GT40 heads are better than stockers but used ones have to rebuilt which is a crap
shoot as to who does the work. When you add up the dollars for reworked GT40s and
aftermarked heads the price gets real close.

RE: 351W camshaft

You can improve the stock Ford heads quite a bit by removing the emission "bumps" in the exhaust ports. See blow for before and after on a set I did for Archion. Unfortunately, the second one looked good on the camera, but is a little washed out and fuzzy.

I see the before.... Where's the after?

Oh, there it is!

What's with the hole under the bump that was removed?

That's the thermactor port.

You know the set of 5/8" pipe plugs you screw into the back of the heads to eliminate the crossover pipe?

Oh, um, them....

(I crimped the pipes closed right at the port because I couldn't get a plug to thread into the holes because there's too much carbon buildup and I can't see buying a tap that big just to clear those threads plus it a biatch to reach behind there anyway and it's too hot to worry about it and the truck runs just fine that way and...)

Oh, and it's pipe plugs, and not a stubby 5/8 bolt?
