Someone posted eariler that you cannot split a sattelite signal. Radio shack sells a device called a multiplexor (spelling). This is what is needed to split the signal.
I just switched from Dish Network stelite, to DirectTV satelite. The main reason I did was the programming. For less than $2 more per month I got alot more channels and all of the Discovery channels, 6-7 total including Discovery Wings (awesome channel). To switch over was FREE. All I had to pay was $15 for the equipment delivery (a 2 reciever system), and they installed it for free. The only kicker was, I had to subcribe for 1 year. No big deal, most cell phone companies now days require 2 year agreements, and besides, I'm in an area that only gets dish anyway.
One thing to mention here, the guy that installed my DirectTV said that DishNetwork leases the satelites (whatever that means) from DirectTV, so Dishnetwork is basically DirectTV. Thing is, I have had both and DirectTV is much MUCH better.
Check out their website, that is how I found out about their Free deal 3 months ago.
If your picture goes bad during a storm it is usually because the dish is not aligned properly and the signal is weak.
The cable system gets it's signal from satellites also. They just align them a little better than the common dish. They also regularly check and maintain them. I have noticed some signal degradation in our cable during storms but it is only a few channels.

I don't think this is actually true. DishNetwork uses EchoStar satellites. EchoStar "is" DishNetworks parent company. EchoStar has eight satellites in space and is the developer of DishNetwork. And i don't believe DishNetwork is DirectTV. I believe DirectTV is owned by Hughes Electronics. They tried to merge a couple years ago but got turned down last year by the FCC. Not enough competition if they had merged. But they are two totally separate companies. And i don't think Hughes Electronics has any satellites in space. Thats why I like DishNetwork. Any time I have a problem they put "a hit" on me and I've got any problems fixed or diagnosed in seconds.

Another vote for DISH/DirectTV. We don't have cable where we are at. The only option was satellite. With the C-Band stuff, it gets expensive when something breaks. They do not last forever.
We didn't pay a dime for any of the DISH stuff. Only have one TV hooked up, the other 2 have VCRS tied to them for movies. ~$40/month
We use Joi Internet service for less than $10 a month, it's less than $6 if you pay for the entire year(we're still testing service). That is unlimited access and no problems yet.
General Moters Co. owns Hughes, which is the parent company of Direct TV. Rupert Merdock is trying to buy Hughes right now because he owns the company NDS which made the smart card that allowed programming. A year or two back Direct tv sued NDS because their employees leaked a crack to gain priate tv. Since then Direct tv (dtv) has started to make their own cards in-house. If you don't know who Rupert Merdock is, well, he is about 3 maybe 4 times the size of Ted Turner (but I'm not talking about weight).-----err, a friend told me this!
We have digital cable here,40.00 a month plus i have cable modem on the computer, and it's 30.00 a month.I like it, alot of channels but sometimes still nothing on!!
We have AT&T Digital cable, 500 Ch.'s and still nothing to watch thats interesting I do like the HBO channels though (channels 550-560 something) We're considering getting a dish though.
We have high speed through verizon no problems usually run at 1.2 they recently lowered there rates. You have to be pretty close to a city though. Great for internet TV and downloading MP3s. Also we run at least 3 computers so wife and kids hate it when I hog all the Bandwidth. On the other side of the room Charter supplys digital cable propiganda at about the same price Hope there computer connection dos'nt screw up as mutch as the TV signals do!
The cable in my hometown ($45.00/month with premiums) is cheaper than a dish ($47 with premiums). And the dish advertises that they have 150 stations but in reality, when you deduct the PPV's and music channels they have the same or less than the 70 plus TV stations that come with the local cable.
