Hey y'all. I need some help with a D20 swap. I already have a thread on it but was told to ask you guys. Could y'all take a look and give me some input. Thanks. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...l#post10690908

Reason: fixed link
Answered in your other thread, but give me a measurement from transmission where it mounts to bell housing to flat portion of yoke where U joint mounts. I have a few different combo's I can measure and may be able to tell you what will work.
Hey thanks! I'll get them for you. Also, I have a np435 that was behind a 302, do you know if the input shaft on it would be the same length as the one on the 435 behind my 390.
Can't answer that one. The one I bought was from behind a small block. The big block tranny's had a 31 spline output shaft and I needed the 28 spline to match up to the Dana20. Input shafts I think are the same, but don't take my word on that.
I am pretty sure they are the same length, but a lot of time the spline count for big block and small block transmissions are different. The guys on the 73 to 79 forum might be able to give you the skinny.... I know that is the case for 67-73 Mustangs.... Many of the aftermarket 164T flywheels are tapped and patterned for a 10" 10.5" and 11" clutch discs so you can use the big block trans behind a small block.... however, I would measure the distances with a combination square and then check the thickness and spline count before you do anything...
What is the difference between the "T" handle and the "J" pattern? Which is better? And Why?
The T wuz 67 -72 (altho I think the 66 looked like 72 + but had the 4 position straight line shift like 67 -72). It is slightly lower geared (like .3 or sompin sm). Had 4 wh low, 4 wh hi, N, 2 wh hi, 2 wh low. The J is a j pattern shifting route (not straight) and had a shift ball rather than a T. It only had 3 gears I think. As Richard sez each has advantages on mods & prts to mod from the typical venders.
Get a 205 for more beef & still low weight...
I am not sure about the difference in gearing. There is no internal difference between the two, but the shift rods are different lengths from the T to J case.... causing the need for different shifters. O a T case with an aftermarket single you can usually access 2Lo on a t case, its between all the way up, 4LO and N.... on a J its virtually impossible 2Lo with a stock style shifter.... it takes twin sticks to accomplish this......
Hey Boba!
Good ta C U again...
I thought the twin wuz so U could shift the frnt n rear axles independently (engage 1 @ a time, disengage one axle while in 4 wd), spin around an obstacle...
but give me a measurement from transmission where it mounts to bell housing to flat portion of yoke where U joint mounts.
I came up with 26 1/8". I took a pic and edited it with different measurements, but I can't post attachments.

So it sounds like the T shift is the best way to go if you don't plan on modifying it.

is it made to be able to shift that way or is it like a sweet spot you have to find?
This combination is 29". Try to find the length of a NP435/NP205 combo. The 205 is near bullet proof, with only disadvantage being the low range ratio is only 2:1 vs 2.46:1 for the Ford "T" shift Dana 20. Since the NP435/205 was actually installed in pickups, it may be a better fitting choice. Hope this helps somewhat.

Which combo is that pictured? I was told the d20 was the only direct bolt in swap for a d21. What would I have to do to put in a 205?
