Tightening Ignition Switch
Bill, the bell shaped thingy with the spring against it holds the bezel tight against the two horizontal notches around the holes rim. The bezel locks on the two pins on the side of the ignition switch barrel where the key cylinder goes in.The other three notches for the bell thingy are to keep the switch and bell straight in the hole. Pictures don't lie. If you or anyone else needs some pics of a disassembled complete switch to check by. I'll be glad to post some in the next couple days.

Jim, I know I'd appreciate some pics. The bezel is worn out and kinda cobbled up like it's been attacked by vice grips. I believe the PO is to blame. Anyway, I think something is missing on mine. My spring just sits against the back side of the dash. So I don't mean to hijack the thread, but those pictures would be pretty helpful when you have the time to post them.

Had the same switch turning problem.
For me the trick to an easy installation (after buying a new bezel and switch), was fitting the slightly bent bell-shaped cup on the backside of the dash to the switch hole.
Spent easy 15-20 minutes making sure the tabs on the bell shaped cup properly fit the 3 notches punched around the metal dash switch hole. Did some very careful bending and some careful filing to insure the 3 tabs were engaged with, and flush with the front of the punched dash switch hole and notches. With the cup tabs flush, the cup could not turn - that is the key factor.
Properly oriented the switch and spring on the back and made doubly sure the cup was held correctly in place. Placed the bezel on and from the back pushed in and rotated the switch so it would lock in place. Then replaced the ignition cylinder as described.
Piece of pie! (I don't really like cake that much

Either way, the bezel I'd shot on mine and slides around. Jim, Bill, despite your disagreement on what holds it in place, you've both been really helpful. Hopefully it helped tue guy who started this thread too. Heck, he's probably already fixed his.
This thread has helped a lot in understanding how the darn thing goes together. Haven't gotten around to trying the fix yet, but plan to next weekend. Anyway, thanks a ton for all the pictures and advice!
