SCT tuning ;-)

So I have been thinking of getting 5Stars tunes for my X3 that is just sitting here. Haven't used it since I sold the diesel, and I'm waiting for a report from Storm on the 87 Perf tune. I was thinking about that and the 93 Perf tune, you can get 2 e-mail tunes from Mike for $100. My buddy Pwrstrke97 is thinking about doing the same. From the little amount I read on Storm's thread he said something like "holy ...." and he, coming from custom tuning his 6.0 like I did, that gives some credibility to me about how well it works. I "played" with an ASE (aggressive street economy tune) from Spartan which IIRC was around 120 hp. It scared me honestly, so for a daily tune I just ran a 20+ hp (Stock+) tune which had some improved shifting and a little more power for turning the 37's. Thats basically what I'm looking for with this truck, a little more power and improved shifting due to the larger tires. Anyone else running Mikes tunes, how do you like them? I am planning on calling Mike tomorrow possibly if I don't work due to the rain.

That's about all you're gonna gain on a gasser. 20 to 25hp is the norm on most gas engines. The diesels gain crazy numbers from a good tune.

Thank you Jimmy. 106 views and one reply . I'm waiting for Storm to return my PM so I can get the scoop from him, as he just tuned his.

Tim I love what Mike did for my '06. I'm sure you'll be pleased with what he can build you. His customer service is top notch also.

I wanted to do the same with my X3 that I had for my diesel but SCT told me that it would not work cause it had to be a enhanced device and mine was a non enhanced or the other way around. I'll be pissed if it works for you cause I already sold mine let us know how you like it if you get it done

Hmmmmm, interesting. Mine is a part # 3000, was yours also? I will call Mike tomorrow and get some answers, providing I don't have to work. What state is he in? Maybe I can call even if I do work so long as I get home in time. That would be a bummer. I wouldn't be able to spend $400+ w/o the CFO kicking my butt. $100 is a different story. If it doesn't work I have a buddy with a 6.0 that wants to buy it.
EDIT: Did you call 5Star and ask them? Or you called SCT directly?

Hey Tim,

Totally worth the price of admission for just the improved shifting and losing that really annoying throttle delay!!! I got mine from Mike @ Five Star(

That instant throttle response will have you grinning for sure. The transmission won't even be noticable after a few minutes. Kinda like wearing a watch; it just fits. Return it to stock and you'll be like a baby crying for it's bottle.

I have had it on the truck for about 10 days; used the 87 econo tune mostly the 1st week and then have had it on the 87 performance/tow mode since Thursday night.

As far as improved power, the seat of the pants feel is that the motor is more responsive and moves through the gears more crisply. It is more fun for sure! (except the using more gas part cause you can't keep your foot out of it)

Gas mileage: I have a sixty mile round trip commute and will typically roll into work with the mpg meter at 21 to 22 and settle in at just around 20 for the round trip. Very similiar numbers since adding the tune. Not better but certainly not worse. But have not yet stopped playing with the throttle yet so I expect it to improve slightly.

I can't wait to try the 91 tune later this week once I get closer to empty and refill Need to go buy a couple gallons of racing fuel to mix in so the I'm sure to have 91 octane. I had a Diablo chip on my 01 and got a slightly better mileage on 91 octane. Enough to offset the additional cost of premium. But again the enjoyment factor was big.

Tim

Well you were right, so you can step back from the edge, lmao! Just emailed Mike and he said if the serial # starts with XP its good to go, mine starts with X3 so no good for the F150. Gotta save a few bucks and maybe in a couple weeks i can pull the trigger.

Can you give a review for the 87 Econ tune? Is it worth it? What results did you achieve, like did you see a MPG improvement, and if so how much and was it at a sacrifice of power? Thanks

Well, I just pulled the trigger on a new SCT from Mike. I am pretty excited! Had a half day due to the rain, cashed in my change that I've been saving, and tapped the "secret stash" fund, so the CFO can't complain too loud. She probably will, but its better to beg forgiveness than permission I always say. It will be in the mail tomorrow he said, got an 87 performance/tow tune and same in a 91 octane. Can't wait!

Nice!

Hopefully my phone call to him around 12:05 didn't interupt him in the middle of building your tunes!!

I doubt it. I didn't call until around 2ish, so you're good to go! He's a pleasure to deal with. I just can't wait to see the difference in how my truck runs. My buddy just bought an '11 SC EB and picks it up tonight, I gotta have something for him ya know?

HAHAHA I hope you have a trailer with a 5,000lb load for your buddy to hook up to, otherwise you're toast Tim! Even with the tune, he's still likely to pull a couple lengths on ya, but hey, it'll be fun trying
